I will be honest. Reviewing Smashburger in Draper was my third experience with the restaurant. I walked into another location a year or so ago, saw the menu by the door and walked right out. Why? Because the first burger I read on the menu said “American cheese.” If you need to know anything about me, it is I like American cheese almost as much as Kristina likes Mario Lopez. So, it wasn’t until a good friend, Emily Hill, treated me to lunch one day that I came to love Smashburger. If you need to know one other thing, love doesn’t come for free; you have got to sell me, and sell me Smashburger did.

It wasn’t just the amazing decor or the clean lines, clean restaurant and friendly staff. Although, if you take a look below, Emily and I may have been a little excited about the eye candy that was, as we lovingly referred to him, “Tom, the Silver Fox.”  Actually, Tom is a very nice looking, older, married man, but that aside we enjoyed hearing how excited Smashburger was about their work in the community and especially working with a number of schools giving free meals to students. As a mother, I know and understand how important it is for my children to accomplish goals, and if it wasn’t for a business like Smashburger providing a reward for them once the goal was accomplished, it wouldn’t be as sweet.  Kudos to Smashburger for all of their local community support.

Tom was kind enough to snap some photos of me smashing. (Although, you can see he found the other Sassies a bit more appealing. Either that or my camera is uber complicated to maneuver. I’ll assume the latter.) Yes, they really smash the burgers. How else did you think they got their name? Honestly, I had no idea why it was called Smashburger. Now I do, and so do you.

After a smashing good time in the back, it was time to create my own burger, which was my favorite part. I get to include what I want, exclude what I hate, and make the best burger in the world for me. So, what did I try? 1/3lb burger on the egg bun, Swiss cheese, fried egg, bacon, guacamole, and chipotle sauce. It was phenomenal and I am a HUGE burger snob. This one is at the top of the list.

Let’s not forget the cookies and cream shake. I am yet another snob when it comes to shakes and this one has real Haagen-Dazs ice cream. Be still my beating heart.

Unlike another Sassy, I actually adored the sweet potato fries. I loved the rosemary fries as well; if I wasn’t on such an anti-carb diet at the moment I would have devoured my fries and everyone else’s. The haystack onions were no less than incredible as well as the dipping sauce. I am still not sure what that was, but I could have eaten it with my finger.

Cheesy, I know, but let me leave you with one tip: Try Smashburger in Draper; it just might change your life, or at least the part of your life where burgers, cheese, and fries are concerned.

Emily: I am a super duper big fan of Smashburger and eat there often, so I’m not sure I could give a first impression other than I was glad to be walking through those Smashburger doors!
Joanie: Clean restaurant, nice and simple menu, not too many choices. Good burgers.
Kim: Loved the modern and fun decor. I love places that embrace the modern and this place is happening. I hope it is something they strive to keep up and keep going as the years go by. Very important that the ambiance of the restaurant matches the food. Well done.
Kristina: The restaurant is modern and inviting. I like that almost every seating area is either a booth or is attached to a booth. I don’t think anything really stood out to me as being unique or different than other burger places, but there was nothing that I didn’t like about it, either.
Lindsey: Very clean. It smells delicious. I liked the tile behind the register. The menu was easy to understand with those cute little icons. Then there was the shock that they use real Häagen-Dazs ice cream in their shakes and floats. I respect that.
Shannon: All cool and modern, a clean, stainless steel space with yummy smells.
Stephanie: I was so happy to see that Smashburger in Draper was still as bright, clean, and delicious smelling as my first visit about a year ago. Plus there is plenty of seating for large groups which is always a must when the Sassies get together.

What did you like the most?

Emily: Honestly, the Mushroom Swiss is my most favorite burger on the menu. Just throw in a side of fried pickles and it’s heaven on a plate! I’m also a huge fan of the Baja Cobb salad—delicious! Oh, and I almost forgot…I love how involved Smashburger is with the community. They do a lot to support local causes.
Joanie: I liked the Classic Smashburger and the Avocado Club Smashchicken best.
Kim: THE BURGER. Oh my goodness, I am a burger snob and as far as burgers go, this is truly almost at the top of my list. I also adored the cookies and cream shake. If you know me, you know I have one almost weekly and this one, again, is almost at the top of my list. DELISH. Let us not forget the chipotle sauce…I could eat it by the spoonful.
Kristina: I loved the fried pickles. They were well battered and their Smashsauce is delicious. I was also very excited to see that they offered blue cheese as a cheese option. The stinkier the cheese, the better. My husband is very appreciative of that. The Veggie Fries were also great. Anything that can make vegetables unhealthy works for me.
Lindsey: Honestly, my burger was delicious. Coming from me, that means a lot. I make no bones about being a Five Guys Burgers and Fries girl. (Hello! I’m a Virginian!) But, my burger was very juicy and ridiculously flavorful. I had it with American Cheese and a fried egg—kind of different for me to not have a billion toppings, but in this case, less was really more.
Shannon: The flash-fried asparagus. Oh, the asparagus. SO GOOD. I might have to go there today now to get some more. SO GOOD. (Did I already say that?)
Stephanie: Getting a backstage tour of the kitchen. It was so much fun to see where the magic happens. Plus learning more about the smashing process and that it doesn’t take all those delicious juices out of your meat. And… Smashing a burger was pretty darn fun.

Emily: Hmmm…honestly I like pretty much everything on the menu, though the buffalo sauce is a bit spicy, but that’s just buffalo sauce in general. Oh, I know! The one thing I don’t like is you can’t get the Team Awesome burger at this location.
Joanie: I did not like the fries that everyone else loves ONLY because I don’t care for sweet potatoes OR rosemary. I do like their regular fries though.
Kim: The fried pickles. Although I did not even try them. I just hate pickles and therefore feared them. However, my pickle-loving fellow Sassies enjoyed them heartily.
Kristina: I’m not a big fan of sweet potato fries in general and these were no exception. They were crunchier than the ones I’ve had, but I still wasn’t a huge fan. I also do not like that they don’t do call-ahead orders. I work up the street from the Draper location and generally choose places I can call ahead or pick up through the drive through, so I don’t know how likely I would be to visit.
Lindsey: The fries are not my favorite. I think I will still stick with Five Guys for those.
Shannon: Honestly, I liked it all. Not sure if there was a kid’s menu? (Probably there was and I was just concentrating on stuffing my own face.)
Stephanie: That I couldn’t eat. Stupid diet. But that is over now and I plan on going in shortly and getting some of those fried pickles. Who’s with me?

Emily: I have. Lots and lots of times. And I’m planning to take my dad when he comes out for a visit in July.
Joanie: Absolutely.
Kim: Most definitely. In fact, I did indeed treat one of my good friends to dinner at Smashburger recently and had to endure her “oooh my goodness this is so good” for a good hour, but I didn’t mind because I was saying the same thing to her.
Kristina: Yes. I was impressed with some of their changes. In the past I wouldn’t have recommended them because I felt like they over-sauced their burgers. I once ordered a burger with mustard, and that was all I could taste. They have seem to really eased up on the sauce. Their salads are great and their burgers are quite tasty.
Lindsey: Totally! In fact, I took my husband back a few days later to have him try the same burger I had to compare it to our beloved Five Guys. He thought it was delicious too!
Shannon: Yes, especially the fried asparagus. Oh, and the burgers.
Stephanie: Yes! I actually have referred many people there. I am constantly telling my husband to take some of his work friends to the Orem location. The burgers and fries are perfect for healthy man (hey… and woman) appetites.

Disclaimer: The Sassies were treated to a tour of Smashburger, a try at “smashing” and a taste of their menu in exchange for a review on SassyScoops.com.

About a year ago, Smashburger welcomed the Sassies with open arms and open stomachs. And last month, they did it again. Smashburger in Draper invited the Sassies back to review some of their new items and see if anything has changed or improved. And I can tell you, I was a happy camper.

Smashburger corporate headquarters are located in Denver but all five Smashburger locations in Utah are locally owned and operated.

Smashburger uses 100% Angus beef and has a special “smash” technique, hence the name. Every burger, both beef and chicken, are smashed to order. No frozen patties here! We also learned that as long as you smash the meat before it starts cooking, you don’t lose any of the delicious, fatty juices that make your dopamine levels shoot through the roof.

Smashburger also carries healthy salads—you know, if you’re into things like caring about your heart and body. If you have seen my picture, you will know that I am against anything good for you.

Smashburger offers several items that are original to their Utah locations, such as their ever popular Beehive Burger, which has BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese and haystack onions. No wonder they call Utah “Zion.”

I was thrilled to see fried pickles on their menu. My first job was at a “Mom and Pop” burger joint in Springville, and when I wasn’t busy driving my giant Oldsmobile into the drinking fountain on the side of the building, I was making beer-battered fried pickles. I am always on the hunt to find something close to what we used to make, and I can honestly say that Smashburger’s fried pickles are as close to what we used to sell as I have been able to find. They were amazing.

Check out Smashburger’s menu for items like:

The All American Smashburger: American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, onion, pickles and Smash sauce on an egg bun.

Spicy Baja Burger: Pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, chipotle mayo and fresh jalapeños on a chipotle bun.

Avocado Club SmashChicken: Grilled or crispy chicken breast with fresh avocado, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing and mayo on a multi-grain bun.

Honey BBQ Ranch SmashChicken: Grilled or crispy chicken breast with applewood smoked bacon, haystack onions, lettuce, tomato, honey BBQ sauce and ranch dressing on an egg bun.

Chicago Dog: Yellow mustard, tomatoes, pickles, sport peppers, sweet relish and onions.

Baja Cobb Salad: A mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of grilled or crispy chicken, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, diced tomatoes, red onions, with spicy chipotle dressing, topped with guacamole and fresh jalapeños.

Harvest Chicken Salad: A mix of fresh garden greens topped with strips of grilled or crispy chicken, sliced marinated balsamic tomatoes, raisins, cranberries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, blue cheese, with balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

You can also create your own! I was thrilled to see they offered blue cheese as an option.

And don’t forget the sides like Veggie Fries, Sweet Potato Smashfries or Haystack Onions. And finish off the meal with one of their sweet milkshakes.

What is it about Smashburger that makes them unique? First of all, you can be assured that what you’re eating is real, 100% Angus beef. Fresh, not frozen – smashed, seared, and seasoned onto a flat grill. All the condiments, produce, and cheeses are the real deal as well. Everything is fresh. And once you bite into that delicious sandwich, the juices and grilled, smoky flavor immediately tell you it’s true. Smashburger is your indoor summer BBQ party all year long.

The Sassies were honored to be invited by Smashburger, along with our families, to experience their amazing menu in Draper, UT.  We were greeted at the doors with open arms (figuratively and literally).  It was as if to say, “You look hungry.  Make yourselves comfortable. Our home is your home.  Please spill fruit punch on our  brand new carpet (sorry about that Smashburger).”  Not a lot of conversation was taking place during the event as you’ll witness in the video.  Our focus was on narrowing down the menu items, and eventually filling our mouths with the amazing food.

Other smashing options you’ll find on the menu are:

Smashfries: tender, crispy fries, tossed with rosemary, olive oil, garlic, and other herbs for a savory flavor

Veggie-frites: flash-fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans.

Smashwedge: a large wedge of crisp iceberg lettuce, topped with bacon, chopped tomatoes, red onions, blue cheese crumbles and blue cheese dressing.

And of course, the unique-to-Utah Beehive Burger: honey BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and haystack onions on an egg bun.

I think it’s safe to say that you will not be disappointed, after a visit to your local Smashburgers, with anything found on the menu.  Check out the milkshake moustaches and food residue on our kiddos’ faces (and ours too, let’s be honest) as proof.

Camille: Catchy name, clean facilities, friendly service. I could make Smashburgers a regular part of my eating-out experience!
Emily: The name is tantalizing for sure and when I walked in the door I loved the crisp, clean, shiny colors and stainless steel everywhere. The customer service was A+ from the moment you walked through the door.
Evonne: A little over priced for something I thought was like a “fast food” joint.
Kalli: Didn’t seem like a burger joint but more of a hipster/casual sort of place.
Michelle: Looks nicer than your average burger place. When Jared saw that you could add an egg to your burger it jumped above all other burger places in the area.
Quinn: Fun environment; loved the typography on the walls and the big windows showing off the mountains in the background.
Stephanie: How bright and open the store was. I love good lighting in restaurants. For some reason it seems to make the food look and taste better.
Vanessa: Clean and modern design, warm and friendly staff and a very user friendly menu. I love booths and I am glad they fit in quite a few of them! Their food is beautiful, picture perfect, and quite tasty as well.

Camille: Eating there made me reminisce of summer BBQ’s in my parents’ backyard: grilling burgers made with real meat, and the same hospitable family-friendly atmosphere!
Emily: Their flash-fried veggies (carrots, green beans and asparagus) were really yummy and their smashfries were also super tasty. (They were my daughter’s favorite part of the meal!) My kids thought the shakes were super tasty and probably ate their weight in ice cream!
Evonne: I loved the pickles on my sandwich and the awesome bun!
Kalli: The fries and the wedge salad were seriously good, also I liked the bun on my burger. Friendly managers and staff were eager to please and quick to clean up.
Michelle: I am not usually a burger person, but my Classic burger was really tasty and well dressed. We liked that you could build your own hamburger just how you like it for the same price as a normal burger. We also really like that the napkins were on the table not by the drinks. It was convenient and cuts down on waste because you only take the amount you need.
Quinn: I loved my kids’ chicken strips. I’m a bit picky with chicken strips and these were perfect: crunchy, crispy, tasty breading on the outside with nice, tender meat on the inside. I also loved the asparagus spears in the veggie frites and the smash sauce on my Classic Smashburger. My husband loved his smashfries and loved the milkshakes.
Stephanie: The grasshopper shake. I am a huge fan of mint shakes and that did not disappoint. And you can tell they use high quality ice cream in their preparation.
Vanessa: The beef patty on the burgers—it was the perfect thickness, done-ness, crispy but moist. The buns! They are egg buns and fabulous! I would snack on those just on their own! My girls were absoluely loving the milkshakes; it was actually quite scary how much they consumed. My husband swears by their fries; he loves that they have olive oil and rosemary on them.

Camille: That I saw so many other menu items catching my eye after I ordered! Good excuse to go back…
Emily: I’m a big fan of a good, spicy burger or chicken sandwich but the Spicy Baja burger was so spicy it totally drowned out the taste of the actual burger. The chipotle bun had some serious kick baked right in; that combined with the pepper jack cheese and a spicy chipotle sauce was too much for even these spice-lovin’ tastebuds.
Evonne: Their burgers had way too much sauce.
Kalli: My burger was a bit meaty for my personal taste, but I’m sort of a weirdo. I should have taken them up on the offer for more BBQ sauce too.
Michelle: I wish you could get the veggie frites without the carrots. I am not a cooked carrot person. Jared thinks the fry sauce could have been better. {I might have to agree with Jared on this one; not my fave fry sauce.}
Quinn: It was a bit fatty for my tastes (roughly 1000 calories – half of those from fat – per burger). I’m not a big fan of tons of sauce and juice dripping out of my burgers, so next time I’d order it with the sauces on the side. The prices seemed a little high for their burgers/sandwiches, especially considering they don’t come with sides. It would cost about $8-11/person to get their choice of burger and fries/side. However, the meat they use seemed to be of excellent quality, so maybe that’s where the price comes in (the hamburger meat was REALLY good). The kids meal pricing was just right, though, and you got a lot of food for $3.99.
Stephanie: It is probably a little more expensive than I would normally spend to take my family out for burgers. But the price definitely matches the quality which is A++.
Vanessa: They really need a veggie burger option on the menu, salads for vegetarians don’t cut it. Their veggie frites (“fries”) need to cost as much as the regular fries; don’t up the prices on healthy items! The “Smash” sauce that comes on the burger is actually quite good and the burger holds it really nicely BUT a few of us got way too much on our burgers so be sure they don’t do that to your burger too! Their chicken sandwich didn’t impress us too much either.

Camille: I have to try the smashwedge so the answer would be YES!
Emily: For sure! My husband couldn’t make it and I’d love to let him try it. He’s a big fan of the egg on the hamburger thing like Jared so he’d love that fun little perk. Plus those smashfries are rather addictive!
Evonne: I would go back, but probably just with my husband.
Kalli: For the fries? Yes.
Michelle: Yes, the burgers were good and so were the prices. Plus, you can get a half pound burger!
Quinn: Yes, but not regularly as our family doesn’t eat that type of food much. The smashchicken supposedly has quite a few less calories than their burgers, so I’d go with that next time. One of the local representatives was talking it up and it sounded really yummy! It would be a fun place to go for a girls’ night, date night or a family birthday outing. {Um, better see Vanessa’s comment above on the smashchicken…}
Stephanie: Yes. I have been to one of the other locations before and now there is one closer to home so I will surely be back!
Vanessa: Yes! Lots of times I don’t enjoy burgers because of the way the beef patties are but Smashburge’s I find absolutely perfect. I would definitely go there if I was craving a burger and fries. They have just enough options for their kids menu and my husband craves Smashburger quite frequently. It is a great family dinner spot for us.

“Utah has welcomed Smashburger with open arms,” said Smashburger’s president, Scott Carne. “We can’t wait for Draper residents to taste Smashburger’s ‘better burgers’ and become the city’s favorite place for burgers.”  Smashburger just opened theirfourth location in the area on March 3rd, and the Sassies (along with husbands and kiddos) were invited the day before to check it out!  The Sassies met with all of the owners, employees, press team, etc. to learn how Smashburger came to be, what it will bring to Draper, AND most importantly, HOW IT TASTES!

So what are they bringing to Utah? To represent the tastes of Utahns,Smashburger put together a special Beehive Smashburger made with US in mind. The Beehive Smashburger starts with one-third or half-pound 100 % certified Angus beef burger which is then topped with honey BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and haystack onions on a toasted egg bun.

I KNOW.

Not a red meat guy or gal? The have a Beehive SmashCHICKEN version. They also heard that out here in Utah we like shakes.  The grasshopper flavor was a bit new to them, but when they heard about it,they made sure to add a grasshopper mint shake made with Haagen-Dazs ice cream t0 their menu.
