The Sassies went out last weekend in stealth mode . . . that is, we didn’t let The Copper Onion know ahead of time we would be showing up with the intention of reviewing their establishment on our site.

The Copper Onion, located in downtown Salt Lake City, boasts “Regional American Fare in a casual atmosphere.” Chef and owner Ryan Lowder brings a wealth of worldwide experience and training to the table, along with General Manager/Owner Colleen Lowder and Sous Chef Jamison Frank. Taking a special interest in local sustainability, they are able to source much of their menu from local and regional locales.

The restaurant itself is contemporary and creative in its decor. The menu is extensive (dinner, lunch, brunch, afternoon, and dessert, as well as a comprehensive drink selection), and features a medley of fresh combinations of new tastes, as well as dishes meant to be shared family-style. Reservations (recommended) can be made online through opentable.com. **

So, how did it go at The Copper Onion? Without having interviewed the owner, how much did we learn? Without having made previous arrangements, how were we treated? And what of the food? We’ll let you know on Wednesday!

I had been given the address to our SassyScoops destination, Gourmandise, and as I turned the last corner before arriving, I gasped: I love this place! I had been there twice before but couldn’t remember the name nor the address. After parking and walking in, I could tell the other Sassies were just as excited as I was to be there.

After sitting at our table we were all delighted to find an extensive dinner menu—we had all known of Gourmandise as an authentic European bakery, but didn’t have as much experience with the café aspect. Becky (PR) gave her recommendations and set us up with server Ashley, who was very knowledgeable about the menu, helpful, and attentive.

We browsed through the menu of Panini and deli sandwiches, gourmet salads, and entrees and settled on our choices. Though not all of the entrees looked beautiful, they all made up for it with taste.

Not everyone enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon, but I did. What surprised me most was the Lemon Chicken Quarter; I almost didn’t taste it because it didn’t look extremely appetizing, but after putting the chicken into my mouth, I involuntarily elicited a “Wow!” under my breath. The taste was delectable, the taste of lemon just right. My usual go-to is salmon, but when I saw it in a puff pastry I was suspicious (because puff pastry? On salmon?). Again, I learned my lesson to not judge a plate by its cover: it was, in my opinion, the best-tasting thing on the table.

Of course no trip to Gourmandise would be complete without some time spent at the pastry cases choosing precisely how you’ll end your evening (sweetly, of course). Don’t be intimidated if you don’t know how to pronounce what you’re ordering; it’s okay to just point (and drool, but be discreet).

And, of course, you need to choose a little extra to bring home with you (“for the kids”).

I have to mention, I’m really glad Gourmandise’s site is kept up-to-date with seasonal menu items (the salmon! On Fridays!), and that they’re also on twitter so I can find out what’s going on (Chef teaching how to properly make a tart, patio is open, etc.). I do love a business with a social media presence.

Now that I’ve given you a taste of my own experience, it’s time to throw your hat into the ring to get your own.

What was your first impression?

Camille: As soon as I caught sight of that pastry/dessert case up front, I was hoping the new jeans I was wearing that night had a LOT of stretch in them! I’d need it with as many treats I wanted to sample!
Jen: Gourmandise is a beautiful restaurant. My first impressions was it is a wonderful location, and holy moly—what an amazing dessert case!
Jenny: “Oh my goodness—I LOVE this place! I’ve been here before but couldn’t remember the name of it. I’m so glad we’re here.”
Kim: The smell. So yummy. Loved walking past the huge bakery window on my way to the table. It got me so so excited for my dining experience and the dessert afterwards.
Kristina: I love Gourmandise. I used to go there regularly when I first moved to SLC, about 10 years ago, when it was called “The Bakery,” and they have really updated and modernized it. It looks like a European bakery and you can’t take your eyes off the giant case of sweets that will add about 5 inches to my butt, which you don’t even care about because everything looks so good.
Lindsey: I had no idea they has such a serious selection of pastries! They were both impressive and stunning. The colors in the tarts were exquisite and I have never seen so many kinds of chocolate cake.

What did you like the most?

Camille: I didn’t realize they had a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I was really impressed with the flavor combination of the summer salad, their version of the grilled cheese and the salmon dish in the puff pastry—full of flavor, yet not heavy! Plus, the kids’ menu is inexpensive and includes PB&J’s! Very realistic!
Jen: I love the whole atmosphere of the restaurant. There were people in there eating and socializing, as well as people stopping by to pick up a beautiful dessert to take home.
Jenny: The food, But Of Course! I knew their desserts were top notch so I shouldn’t have been surprised to find the entrees were outstanding as well. The salmon was my favorite. Also, Ashley was a fantastic server, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.
Kim: I loved the salmon. I am not a huge seafood fan, and to be honest it didn’t look all that appetizing, but I didn’t let that stop me. It was divine and the lobster bisque sauce on the side was TDF. I also ADORED the yummy, yummy salad and homemade poppy seed dressing. It was so creamy and delicious, it could have been dessert on its own.
Kristina: I LOVED the Lemon Chicken Quarter. I almost stabbed a Sassy in the eye in order to get more than my fair share and was completely unapologetic. I also loved the grilled cheese. I sort of have a grilled cheese obsession and this did not disappoint. I think my favorite dessert is one of the most simple, which is their chocolate mousse.
Lindsey: The Saumon en Croûte was incredible. When it came out from the kitchen, I didn’t think that I would like it because it wasn’t the “prettiest” dish on the table, but that lobster scream sauce is the stuff. Very good.

Camille: It was confusing to know whether to sit down at a table to be served, or order at the counter then find a seat.
Jen: I can’t think of anything I didn’t like.
Jenny: The awkward parking lot, but being downtown, you do the best with what you’ve got.
Kim: The beef bourguignon. Usually I love it, but this did not do it for me. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t get myself to love it.
Kristina: I wasn’t a huge fan of the Beof Bourguignon. I don’t love things cooked in red wine, and it was a bit bland to me. I’ve also had their chicken salad in the past and was disappointed it had curry in it. I’m a chicken salad traditionalist and so I was disappointed I couldn’t get a traditional chicken salad sandwich.
Lindsey: It was very crowded when we were in there and it took a while for some of our food to get to us. It is also confusing when you walk in—if you want a pastry, you go right up to the counter. If you want a meal, you seat yourself.

Camille: Yes…and with so much to offer for food/treats and their late hours of operation, any time would be a great time to visit!
Jen: Yes! I have been talking about it with my family and mom and plan to come back soon.
Jenny: Without question. I’d also suggest they bring me with them.
Kim: Most definitely. I love Gourmandise and have since I was little. I love the plethora of desserts to choose from and every time I go I crave a little something different and this time my new choice of the Decadense did not disappoint.
Kristina: Definitely and absolutely. I recommend it all the time and will stop by and pick up bakery items when I am downtown, on a regular basis. They have delicious specialty cakes, and they are reasonably priced. I think I will ask if they can put a picture of The Hoff on their fruit tart.
Lindsey: I would recommend it for a late night dinner or dessert, but not for a meal with your family. The food is spectacular for a date night or dinner with friends, but not for my toddlers.

Camille: A very quaint, comfortable dining experience with an amazing combination of flavors! It looked like something right out of “Drive-Ins, Diners & Dives.” I was excited to start tasting!

Kim: Fun downtown location, convenient to the hub of daytime workaholics. Love the BBQ sitting right outside, got me all excited for a little burger love.
Kristina: I arrived a few minutes early and initially the restaurant was a bit messy. Several tables hadn’t been cleared and there was trash on the floor. Rich was very unhappy with his employee and it was a bit awkward to be there while he expressed his displeasure. The restaurant itself was a bit eclectic, and from the outside I would probably miss it if I drove by.
Lindsey: I was intrigued by all the vintage decor—so interesting for a serious burger place. I liked that there is a bar-like area where you can sit and watch your food being made.

What did you like the most?

Camille: It was a toss-up between the blue cheese fries and the Texas BBQ Burger. Actually, anything with Rich’s homemade barbecue sauce was delicious!

Kim: I love anything with bacon on it, so of course when I saw the Blue Bacon Burger, my heart skipped a little beat in anticipation of the joy of eating the burger. I also A-D-O-R-E-D the fried green beans. Can one adore a green bean? Well, I did and the dipping sauce made it all the better. Yum, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Also, Rich’s wife is super super sweet. She gets five stars from me.
Kristina: I loved the Blue Banana burger. It had banana peppers and blue cheese. I love blue cheese, so the Blue Cheese Crumble Fries were to die for. Rich’s burgers are the reason that I will never become a vegetarian. Truthfully, if the Banana burger was made of unicorn meat, I would still probably eat it. I also really liked the Shrimp Po’ Boy.
Lindsey: The food. The Blue Banana Burger, Bayou Burger, Shrimp Po-boy and the Blue Cheese Crumble Fries were incredible. The lemon cider mayo on the Roasted Red Pepper Burger and Po-boy is tangy and delicious. I was also surprised by how much I liked the Blue Cheese Crumble Fries considering I am not a big blue cheese fan, but it was the perfect mix—not too much, not too little.

Camille: The parking (or lack thereof)! But that comes with anywhere you go downtown.

Kim: When Rich called one of my crushes ‘shady.’ Being a business owner myself, I know how it can feel to be ‘in competition’ but you have to save those feelings for people you can trust, not ones who will write it in a review on a blog for the world to see. (Just sayin’.)
Kristina: I was not a fan of the potato salad. It had good flavor, sort of smoky, but the potatoes were quite underdone and hard. I was dying to try the Macaroni and Cheese burger, but was a bit disappointed in it. Their side of macaroni and cheese didn’t look very appetizing. The Sassies also had a discussion about whether the restaurant was family friendly, and due to the high stools for seating, we thought it would be difficult for kids to be able to sit and eat there.
Lindsey: I wanted to like the mac and cheese, I really did, but I found it mooshy and lacking with a little too much flat top grill flavor. I also didn’t like all the tall chairs and tables—my kids wouldn’t do well in that kind of setting.

Kim:Um, heck yes. I want to take my husband there on our required date night; he wants to ride a Segway, I want to eat bacon and stuff my face with fried green beans. It is a win win I’d say. I may also get a hot dog from the shady vendor down the street.
Kristina: I would refer Rich’s if they were looking for a good burger and happened to be downtown. I don’t know if I would necessarily make the drive, but I would definitely recommend it if someone was looking for a good, juicy, gourmet burger. Forget In N’ Out.
Lindsey: Yes! And I would tell them which burgers I thought were the best and to pay attention for the lemon cider mayo! The Blue Cheese Fries are a must.

Disclaimer: The Sassies were treated to a sampling of Rich’s menu and what sounds like some delicious blue cheese. Although one of our Sassies wasn’t a fan of the blue cheese (aka “stinky cheese”), the opinions expressed in this review are unbiased and completely honest.

Summer is upon us, which is synonymous with freshly grilled hamburgers.  Rich’s Mighty Fine Burgers in downtown Salt Lake City, has taken that delicious grilled hamburger and created a full menu adding a flair of flavor combinations that will satisfy the palette of many.

Rich started his business as a street cart vendor in 2007, selling his homemade burgers on the corners of downtown SLC, UT.  After some careful consideration, and realizing they had outgrown the street cart, Rich opened his restaurant, which is currently located at 30 E Broadway #100.

Rich’s Mighty Fine Burgers and Grub boasts many fresh ingredients, including fresh ground beef, homemade sides and toppings, fresh propriety buns, and fresh produce provided by local business owners.  The Sassies were invited to try everything from the blue cheese fries to the shrimp po’boy and everything in between, including a macaroni and cheese hamburger!

Vanessa & Abby: Vanessa: The staff is just so friendly, helpful, personable. They really are superb. We like to go many places as a family for fun and UMNH by has the best customer service by FAR. Also, because my girls love it so much they could not wait to “have school” there and learn about plants.

Emily & George: Emily: I love that the kids can get their hands dirty (or sudsy in George’s case) and learn super cool science things. George was seriously having the best time and didn’t want to leave.

Quinn & Tate: Quinn: My son LOVED all of the water activities and learning. He had an absolute blast and when he’s happy, I’m happy!

Emily & George: Emily: Probably the only things I really didn’t like was the location (a bit of a drive if you can’t carpool) and of course the parking, though they do let you park in President’s Circle…but you have to go in and get a validation to do so.
Evonne & Savannah: Savannah: It ended. {Evonne: Aaah, isn’t Savannah adorable!}
Quinn & Tate: Quinn: I was bummed the weather wasn’t very warm so they couldn’t really do any of the water things outside, but that’s definitely not UMNH’s fault. They did a fabulous job under the circumstances.
Vanessa & Abby: Vanessa: Well, honest to goodness, with how impressed we were I WILL make the drive down to UMNH. At the same time I wonder if they could have another “branch” for certain day camps in the south Salt Lake County area.

Emily & George: Emily: For sure! I’d love to get a little group together so they could attend together. And as they get older you can do the full-day camps in the summer. I’m seriously looking forward to that! And George would recommend the camp to anyone and everyone if he were old enough to do so…
Evonne & Savannah: Evonne: Savannah talked about this for days after! She had a blast! Not only would we go again, we would refer a friend!
Quinn & Tate: Quinn: Yes, definitely!
Vanessa & Abby: Vanessa: Yes, I have referred their day camps to many friends and family and will continue to for years. I was very impressed with every single aspect of the spring and summer camps at UMNH.

The Sassies truly enjoyed watching needles get poked into each other. Brighton and her staff were so kind and lovely to us! We just fell in love with the whole Utah Family Acupuncture clinic!

Brighton told us about all the pediatric ailments she can help children overcome with acupuncture treatment. When Brighton mentioned her treatments can help with bedwetting, I got so excited I booked an appointment that night to come back the following week and bring my son in for a treatment. He’s 4 1/2 and I’ve been washing sheets almost every other night for the past 6-9 months—bless his heart.

Brighton was SO good with my son for his appointment! It was such a relaxed experience. She explained everything to my son in a way he could really understand, making sure she had his consent before doing anything to him. She tried a few needles in his back, but he really wasn’t a fan. (She said that most kids don’t go for that during their first appointment, but have to gradually work up to using needles.) So instead she used the electric stimulation machine on him while he watched her awesome, colorful, light-up fish mobile thing (wish I knew what it was called because it was AWESOME!). He didn’t mind it at all.

Upon finishing his treatment, Brighton placed little magnets and seeds on circular adhesives and put them on 6 points on his back and two points on his feet. She instructed us to have him wear them until they fell off and even gave us extra adhesive for the magnets in case they came off too soon. My son didn’t mind that at all either! She also gave us an herbal remedy for him to take to continue to help his body overcome the bedwetting trouble. All-in-all, he’s only had ONE wet bed in the 10 days since we saw her (a freaking miracle)! We’ll go back in for a few follow-up visits here and there to seal the deal with the treatment.

To put it quite simply: I am a HUGE fan now.

Brighton is so dang sweet and so dang amazing with her treatments I suppose it would be hard not to be a huge fan! Check out this video of Brighton telling us about her practice, why she got into this kind of medicine and how she likes to help people with acupuncture:

{Bless Vanessa’s heart} Vanessa was feeling very adventurous and courageously ordered mussels for one of our appetizers.  When they brought it to our table, the truth came out: none of us are crazy about mussels.  Vanessa felt awful to have ordered the whole plate of them when no one wanted them but her and, thus, took it upon herself to eat as many of them as she could.  We all laughed, but Vanessa didn’t think it was as funny, I don’t think.

Emily’s Stranded Car

In Emily’s haste to get out the door and down to SLC for the review, she forgot to check the gas gauge.  This time, the inevitable happened, leaving Emily’s car stranded in downtown SLC with no gas.  While we were at Wild Grape, Emily’s husband drove down and went through some *heck* of his own to try to fill the car up with gas.  It was an adventure for everyone, to say the least.

Our Waiter’s Cheese Tray Presentation

We had an AWESOME waiter that night.  He was really friendly and personable.  When he brought us our cheese platter, he gave us the full presentation that reminded me of The Office when Andy brings the cheese platter (with Michael hidden in the cart beneath it) into Jim’s meeting.  And, yes, I do feel this is a great excuse to share that clip in this review.  I asked our waiter if he had seen that episode and he said he hadn’t, but he does love The Office.  Good times.

It really IS always fun when Sassies get together.  The atmosphere, scrumptious food and great service at Wild Grape allowed us to thoroughly enjoy ourselves.  We HIGHLY recommend Wild Grape and suggest you go there today.. stop reading, grab your keys and get down there.  You won’t be sorry.
