ClearPlay brings Family Movie Night back HOME!

Here’s a quick synopsis of the ClearPlay experience:

A great family movie night is easy when you use a ClearPlay DVD player and filters. From our review on Wednesday, you can see that while we all had varying perspectives on the experience, overall we think the concept is solid and we thoroughly enjoyed the genius behind ClearPlay.

I love the ClearPlay blog, too.  Moms and dads post reviews of movies and recommend suggestions on what settings work best with that specific movie.

I was afraid that with Ferris Bueller hooked up to ClearPlay, there wouldn’t be any movie left, because he swears–a lot, but I was wrong. Oh, some of his best speeches get whited out a bit, but they still work and you’ll still know what’s going on.
And I just bet you’ll be OK with it–if, like me, you have your kids in the room.

Motherly Advice: In fact, if your teens are decent, law abiding, honest people, they will likely recognize that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is more a good, hard poke at adults who don’t’ engage in their children’s lives, than it is a suggestion that anyone could behave as badly as Ferris–and not end up in jail or dead, nevermind friendless and in detention. They will, along with you, be free to laugh at how ridiculous it all is.

If, on the other hand, you have kids that are, as we speak, trying to pull some of this junk at your place…well, they are likely already grounded from watching TV and you–bless your heart–just wouldn’t find Ferris Bueller very funny…at all.

Whether or not you own a ClearPlay machine, the ClearPlay blog is a fabulous reference to use when deciding if a movie is appropriate for your family.

Emily: That’s one nice looking machine—lovin’ the orange and its super slimness. Can’t wait to see how/if it really works.
Kristina: Well, since I once decided to invent something called DirtyPlay, which would add gratuitous sex, violence, and language to movies like Peter Pan, I was a bit hesitant. But I do think the concept for families and children is sound, and I know a lot of people who are able to watch movies they otherwise wouldn’t for various reasons.
Michelle: I thought the idea sounded really interesting and was something I might enjoy to help screen media for my growing young family.
Quinn: Seemed like a good concept for keeping movies as clean, fun entertainment for the whole family.
Stephanie: I was surprised the box was so small. I expected a huge piece of equipment. But it was just the size of a normal DVD player.
Vanessa: Really impressed. I loved the story of the company, the owner’s personality and story and also what the machine could do. I was excited to have the possibility of watching movies with my family or husband that could be CLEAN!

Emily: I loved the concept of being able to watch movies together as a family without worrying about covering my children’s eyes or ears, though sometimes I’d still like to cover their mouths!
Kristina: I liked that you could set the filter level and choose which elements to filter out. You can use it to watch a DVD with no filter, or have maximum settings, which would basically turn a movie like 40 Year Old Virgin into Mary Poppins.
Michelle: I liked that you could choose if you wanted to screen language, violence or nudity and that there were different levels of screening available.
Quinn: I like there are so many different settings to adjust the filtering according to your audience and standards.
Stephanie: The remote and settings seemed very easy to navigate.
Vanessa: Unfortunately nothing.

What didn’t you like?

Emily: I really didn’t like the jumpiness of the movie, and sometimes I felt a little lost when an entire scene, or almost a full scene, was cut out.
Kristina: Honestly, all I could focus on was what was missing or what was edited out. I also thought it was interesting the American swear words were filtered out but all of the British ones were left it. And believe me, I know the swear words in about 48 different languages. We also had some technical problems with getting it to work and were on hold with ClearPlay for over 45 minutes.
Michelle: It made the movie hard to follow and the editing seemed really choppy and got annoying. I felt as though I was missing important parts, though we were watching a rated R movie on the highest screening setting so they probably did have to cut out a lot.
Quinn: I’m not crazy about the need for a monthly subscription to keep the filtering current, though I understand why they’ve needed it to work that way. Our family doesn’t spend hardly any money each month on movies, but I suppose if we did then the ClearPlay monthly subscription would make a lot of sense to also budget into our entertainment expenses.
Stephanie: The movie seemed to skip and jump quite a bit. I am not sure if it was a broken movie or the editing, but it was annoying.
Vanessa: The first night we watched a movie it was not smooth at all like they say on their website. It was extremely choppy and I think poorly edited. The second night we couldn’t watch a movie because the three times I called into their help line that day I was put on the hold for over 35 minutes every single time and gave up.

Would you refer ClearPlay to a friend?

Emily: I would recommend it to someone who really was serious about editing movies rather than just avoiding watching certain movies all together.
Kristina:At the end of the day, I would. I do think it’s for a very specific type of audience, and it’s not going to make the theme of the movie different, but if you are concerned about your children watching inappropriate things, I think it’s a good product.
Michelle: I think I would have to have more experience than one movie with it to know.
Quinn: Yes, I think there’s definitely a market for this kind of product, especially as it is truly unique. Also, movies seem to be getting a whole lot trashier, so ClearPlay is a great option for those interested in having more control over what their families are exposed to.
Stephanie: It depends on the friend. If it were a friend who preferred sex, violence and language to be taken out of films I would have to reassess our friendship… errr… I mean refer them to ClearPlay. (Just kidding…. I love all my friends equally.)
Vanessa: Unfortunately no. I would love to give ClearPlay a THIRD try, I would. I am so excited for the possibility that I honestly would.

So IF ClearPlay really does what it promises, wouldn’t that be wonderful? No more worrying about you and your family being surprised by a bad word or image or joke. And FINALLY you can watch the movies that look so good but are a rating you wouldn’t normally watch.

As a designer, I’m not crazy about the logo. As an editor, I’m not crazy about the extra Z. But as a Canadian, I’m crazy about the Crazzy Canuck. This Canadian import store used to be located on University Avenue where a trip required you to go out of your way. Now they’ve relocated to the Provo Towne Center, right across from Cinemark movie theater. Sure they boast a variety of hockey and lacrosse equipment, but that’s not why I go. I go there for the Canadian foods that I miss from my home and native land. And to tell you the truth, I was going to be sneaky and suggest that you might want to perhaps consider sneaking a Canadian treat into the movies next time you go, but when I showed up, I was greeted by a huge sign advertising the movie special.

If you check out the Crazzy Canuck sometime soon, here are my top recommendations:

• Wonderbar candy bar. Chocolate and caramel wrapped around peanut butter crunch. So good, and statistically everyone’s favorite.
• Crunchie candy bar. Sponge toffee covered in chocolate. My favorite.
• Smarties. I’ll tell you why they’re better than M&M’s—because the candy shell has its own taste. Suck them before chewing!
• Caramilk. Caramel-filled chocolate. Pure deliciousness.
• Fuzzy peaches. Okay, I’m not totally sure that they carry this Canadian sour candy, but they should!
• Red River hot cereal. Not something you’ll be sneaking into the movies, but take this home for a nutritious breakfast!
• Ketchup chips. If you’ve never eaten Ketchup chips, you don’t know what you’re missing. And I don’t even like potato chips!

Whether or not you’re Canadian, this store has something great to offer you. Stop by and try out any of my recommendations!
