The Sassies were invited to spend the night at Salt Lake City’s only five diamond hotel, The Grand America Hotel. Generally my hotel experiences consist of places that CSI employees would usually investigate due to stabbings, so staying at The Grand America Hotel was like going from shopping at the local dollar store to Saks 5th Avenue.

The Grand America Hotel is located right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. The hotel was inspired by European “boutiques” and has the “allure of Old World craftsmanship.” The hotel boasts 775 rooms and suites, ranging in size from 700 square feet to the 2,000 square feet of the Presidential Suite. All rooms and suites offer Italian marble bathrooms, complimentary Wi-fi (a girl’s gotta be able to check The Hoff fan page at all times), dual vanities, lighted cosmetic and shaving mirrors, down pillows and comforters, and plush bathrobes. Don’t tell my Snuggie I said this, but even it was a bit jealous of the robes.

Some additional hotel amenities are a complimentary business center, boutique shops, a sweet shop/bakery, floral design studio, outdoor swimming pool, indoor lap pool, full service spa and salon, including a fitness center and secure underground parking.

The Grand America Hotel also has their premier restaurant, The Garden Cafe, which has one of the most amazing Sunday brunch buffets in Utah. I have also had the opportunity to eat there during the holidays, and they would most certainly make the pilgrims proud. And slightly envious.

One of the greatest hotel amenities is the Grand Spa. Their services range from hot stone massages, facials, pedicures, to men’s shaves, up-dos, and upper lip waxing. Thankfully, I am no longer mistaken for Burt Reynolds. The salon also offers monthly locals promotions. This month the spa is offering 20% off some of their most popular treatments including The Custom Infusion Massage, The Custom Blend Facial and The Grand Pedicure.

One of the most unique and fun experiences at The Grand America Hotel is their daily Afternoon Tea. They serve various teas and flavored hot chocolates. The teas are accompanied by a variety of tea sandwiches, scones, pastries and desserts. Afternoon Tea is on Monday-Thursday from 2 pm- 5 pm, and Friday-Sunday, at 1 pm and 3:30 pm. Reservations are recommended.

At The Grand America Hotel’s sister hotel, The Little America Hotel, on October 30th from 4-6 pm, they are doing a free event for families with children 12 and younger called Little Spook Street. I’m a busy lady (I’d say “girl,” but teetering on the cusp of 30 makes me feel like I should start referring to myself as an adult). Family dinner is important to me and mine; I spend a good chunk of time in the kitchen as a result. But you know what? Being a gourmet goddess in the kitchen isn’t always as easy or as time-sensitive as one might like.  Enter Shirley J, the wizard of “Cooking Made Easy.”

Chef Brian managed to pull together several dishes out of seemingly thin air in the short time we were there using Shirley J products, including but certainly not limited to, calzones complete with different fillings and a warm marinara for dipping, spring salad (with bacon just for Becca, our guest Sassy) and a fresh vinaigrette, bbq sauces of all varieties and a few others. Becky was also kind enough to send us all home with a variety of Shirley J products to try on our own.

So how did the Sassies fare and what did we think of our test kitchen time? Did we have any success with the Universal Sauce mix, Pizza & Pasta seasoning, Slow Cooker seasoning, BBQ Sauce Mix or Onion  seasonings? Or did Chef Brian show us up in the end? The Utah Museum of Fine Arts introduces those of all ages to art exhibits from around the world. There is something for every taste from African sculptures to Desert Photography. With admission, which is free for kids under six, the UMFA offers free family backpacks for check out that contain activities, games and puzzles to guide you on your exploration of the collections.

Our families were taken on a short tour of the museum and I was surprised to see the variety of pieces and styles represented. My two year old enjoyed trying to emulate the face on a certain blue head sculpture and seeing if he could beat mommy to the “do not touch” items.

After exploring, we were able to take part in The Utah Museum of Fine Arts 3rd Saturday activity. The museum offers free activity days designed for children 4-12 years of age year round on the 3rd Saturday of every month. The hands on activities run from 2 to 4 pm in the Emma Eccles Jones Education Center Classroom. There is no reservation required.Participation is on a first come first serve basis.

During our visit, the activity was learning about printing. We were able to go through the process of seeing one of our drawings printed on to large post cards. This was a hit with the kids and adults alike!

After spending something like 7 years of my life working in a few different offices, I can tell you that I’ve experienced my fair share of catered lunches.  There’s nothing like choking down a soggy sandwich made hours before, accompanied by a droopy salad drenched in who knows what.  Not exactly appetizing to say the least.  All of the Sassies were grateful that this all too familiar scenario was definitely NOT the case for our lunch at the Utah Museum of Natural History provided by Red Butte Cafe Catering in Salt Lake City, UT.

The sandwiches were large, large enough you had to mash them down just to take a bite, not a problem for someone like me whose mouth is ginormous enough to handle such things.  The bread on my sandwich was some variety of whole wheat and tasted good, there was a healthy amount of fresh toppings, and my favorite part: the dressing was left on the side to be added at your own discretion.  Because let’s be honest, there’s nothing worse in this world than a soggy sandwich.  Accompanying these tasty sandwiches was their crazy Greek pasta salad that I’ll be honest, made me a little nervous to look at what with all of the different genres of pasta, veggies cheese and meat going on there.  Like Evonne said, there were some crazy textures happening and it was certainly nothing we’d ever seen before, but it ended up coming together in a perfect combination of flavors, even my 15 month old dug it and he’s a tough customer.

In conclusion, the sandwiches were large and tasty, the salad surprising and flavorful.  Throw in some kettle chips and cookies from My Dough Girl and I’d say you’ve got all the deliciousness of a successful catered lunch.  Well done Red Butte Cafe and thanks a million for catering to the Sassies!  Perhaps next time I’m in the area I’ll stop by and sample the rest of your menu, my interest has certainly been piqued.

Emily: The food, definitely the food, though the grape vines draping around the patio were pretty cool too. I had a taste of Evonne’s steak sandwich and fries and I have to say they totally rock!

Quinn: The food was extraordinary! I died over my pork chop & whipped potatoes – heavenly! I also loved how accomodating (sp?) the staff was. They offer an Italian soda & I was really hungry for a mint chocolate flavor. They don’t offer that, but said they’d try to make it for me. They brought out a divine rendition, complete with real chocolate & mint leaves. It was really refreshing; they should add it to their menu. The desserts were completely amazing, also. I also really appreciate how they work with & support so many local farmers & vendors.
Rebecca: My entree, the Beef Short Rib. So tender and yummy!
Vanessa: The fact that they are so successful in using local, fresh and organic produce. I love how they support OTHER local businesses and our community. While using it to their benefit, the food is almost magical; fresh, ingredients paired perfectly, just amazing.

Emily: The butternut squash soup. It was a bit too thick and the flavor was off just a little bit.
Evonne: I would have liked my meal a little warmer.
Quinn: I wasn’t a fan of the seafood, but I’m not a big seafood fan. The girls at the table who like seafood a lot loved it, though, so I know it was just me.
Rebecca: The prices were a little high for me. But I’m cheap and would eat macaroni and cheese for dinner every night if my husband didn’t care, so I don’t think I’m the best judge!
Vanessa: I didn’t like that the rest of the Sassies were pansies and didn’t eat the mussels with me, come on ladies! Mussels AND Chorizo, how could life get any better than that? (Emily: I at least tried one!)

Emily: Yes! I can’t wait to go there for a date night and I’ve already told lots of girlfriends about Wild Grape Bistro as a must-visit restaurant.

Quinn: Absolutely! I’ve already recommended it to my friends & family, too. My brother-in-law is taking his girlfriend there this month for their anniversary because I’ve raved about it so much.
Rebecca: I wouldn’t go back on my own because good food is just wasted on me. But I would definitely recommend that my husband take a client there! Especially a client he is trying to impress!

Emily: I totally passed it the first time. It is pretty well hidden back from the road and tucked between some commercial properties, but once I walked in and got the tour I knew I’d found a diamond in the rough!

Quinn: Oh, my gorgeousness!!! Completely, stunningly beautiful!

Emily: I loved how every room connected and each one was unique. Plus they were all totally tricked out with audio/visual capabilities, great furniture and even mini fridges. My fave was the theater room, but then again I’m married to an audiophile. Oh, and Nick was totally awesome! He rocked our world at the Moms Who Make It Conference!
Jyl: Playing wii in the racquetball court. So awesome to project the game huge on the court wall.
Marie: I loved the theater room with great big comfy seats!
Quinn: I love the variety of rooms at Noah’s. There’s every kind of space you could ever need from big conference rooms to small game rooms. The patio is my favorite spot at Noah’s, though. It’s magical up there. Whoever did their interior decorating did an amazing job. Everything is well-thought out & planned, down to computers in every room that access everything from lights to the window shades. It’s the perfect place for an event.
Vanessa: How spacious, clean and beautifully decorated everything was. I would be proud to hold any event there.

Emily: Only the location. Though it’s great as far as being between Utah Valley and Salt Lake Valley, it really isn’t in a very pretty setting and hard to find.

Quinn: I wish they had at least one oven in the building. That was a surprise to us and we’ll come better prepared next time. I also wish they had a small area for nursing mothers.
Vanessa: It is really really hard to take pictures in most of the rooms because of the lighting.

Emily: Yes! Especially if it’s a corporate meeting offering fabulous food or a wedding reception promising dancing on the patio!
Jyl: Absolutely! Noah’s was awesome to work with. Their staff was amazingly helpful. The venue rocked. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
Marie: Yes. I can’t wait to suggest it to friends and family for all kinds of functions.
Quinn: Of course! I am in love with Noah’s. If I hear of an event happening at Noah’s I’m more inclined to go because I know it’s such a nice venue.

Okay, so not all of David C. Schultz’s photo shoots take place in subzero temperatures but those are the ones we enjoyed hearing about since those are the ones with the best stories. I’d love to retell some of his arctic exploits in this post but I wouldn’t do them justice. There’s something in the way he tells about the constant rocking of a Russian icebreaker that makes you feel like you’re there, seasickness and all. How David continues to enjoy those adventures is beyond me, but I’m sure glad he does because he snaps some amazing photographs in the middle of that icy nowhere.

As for those expeditions on Russian icebreakers, I just don’t think David was selling it. Perhaps if he’d left out the part about the hungry polar bears and the injuries from the boat’s rocking I might have considered signing up for the next one. (Okay, Mom, you can stop laughing hysterically now.) Here’s David telling us just how much fun those month-long photos shoots can be. By the way, Flip cameras are great but the sound isn’t always the best. You’ll have to crank up the volume just a bit. (And yes, that’s a polar bear skull in the background):

We really had a wonderful time visiting with David and oohing and aahing over his beautiful photography, and believe it or not, not all his photos have snow in the background. You simply must visit his online gallery to view his collection…and then you simply must head to Park City and see them in all their glory. It’s definitely worth the drive, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of Koda in the window.

Not to insult photography, but it seems to be an art form that everyone can “get.” I mean, either the photograph is beautiful (or powerful, or gut-wrenching, or life-changing), or it’s not. I blog (under the name Jane) at Seagull Fountain, where I recently vowed never to use the words “good” and “bad” in the same sentence as “mother” again. I think most TV is highly overrated (esp. that Glee show and the new series Buffy the Vampire Slayer which I just discovered on hulu.com) but love House, Castle, Burn Notice, Bones, and The Office. I don’t have time to read. (Just kidding). Kinda. I think it was really awesome of the Sassies to let me tag along. I’m free most weeknights if you guys are ever reviewing, say, Thai Drift or Bombay House, or, you know, Chick-fil-A.

Tucked away on Main Street in Park City is an art gallery that will educate you, inspire you and leave you with a new appreciation for nature by surrounding you in its beauty, its grandeur and even its spontaneity. Sound poetic? That’s because the photography of David C. Schultz is nature at its most poetic and awe inspiring.

David is the owner of West Light Images gallery in Park City, Utah and his work “captures the brilliant colors, stunning natural features, and tiniest details of the Western American landscape on film.” You can read a bit more about the artist here.

David’s work has been published in magazines like Travel & Leisure, Snow Country, Cowboys and Indians, Islands, and National Geographic Traveler. He opened his gallery in the fall of 1998:

The collection of photographs which I’ve selected to display represents a fraction of nature’s beauty which I’ve been fortunate enough to witness. A very important part of photography is the ability to see the moment, and to have the patience and awareness to wait and observe the light and shadows. I hope visitors to my gallery will enjoy viewing my work. ~ David C. Schultz

Quinn and I and a few guest Sassies were lucky enough to visit West Light Images and meet the artist behind the stunning photography. We can’t wait to share more with you so check back on Wednesday for our official review of the gallery. On our Follow-up Friday we’ll have some awesome behind-the-scenes video where David tells us more about the crazy cold adventures he’s had while photographing some pretty curious penguins and pretty hungry polar bears. You might even catch a glimpse of his dog Koda–we’re told she’s the real boss at the gallery!
