Camille: With all the strength training opportunities that are included with the climbing club, this is some serious rock climbing!
Emily: “Where the heck is the front door to this place? Oh, there it is!” After that initial impression I was amazed at all the services they offered outside the indoor rock climbing and bouldering part.
Stephanie: Where are the ropes? There were people just climbing rock walls like Spiderman.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): The gym has a very relaxed atmosphere.
Veronica (Ogden location): The building is absolutely beautiful! Oh, and also “Holy TALL walls!”

Camille: That Seth, the instructor knew his stuff and was so patient with a couple of newbies who felt very comfortable with only the color yellow.
Emily: The laid-back atmosphere and the willingness of complete strangers to help you scale a particularly difficult yellow-dot route. (Yellow dots are like the green circles of ski runs.) And of course Seth was very, very patient with Camille and me.
Stephanie: That you can bring your dog there and they have an outdoor doggy paradise.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): Our tour guide/instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Veronica (Ogden location): The staff is friendly and they are all experienced climbers, so they are very helpful and willing to teach and answer questions. They were also great with the kids. They even offer after-school programs, climbing clubs and summer climbing camps.

Camille: The location! Unless you’re traveling from the north side of the road, you’ll miss it completely.
Emily: The location was a bit tricky to find as was the front door…or was that just me? (Don’t answer that.) I also felt like it was a bit stuffy inside and the equipment looked like it needed a good cleaning.
Stephanie: The climbing. I am afraid of heights. And it was in serious need of air conditioning.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): I was sad that due to an injured arm, I couldn’t try climbing.
Veronica (Ogden location): I can’t think of anything!

Camille: Absolutely! And I’d even go back with that friend just to continue building the callouses on my fingers.
Emily: If I knew someone who was interested in bouldering, for sure! I think it’s a great way to change up a workout or fitness routine.
Stephanie: Any of my daredevil friends would LOVE this.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): Yes. I also want to check out their Ogden location. {Which, of course, she finally did with her family for this review–yay!}
Veronica (Ogden location): Absolutely! Ogden is SO lucky to have The Front right downtown. The revitalized downtown area is big on “outdoor” adventure activities. Now they have indoor surfing, skydiving and rock climbing/bouldering all within a few blocks of each other. Where else can you get that?

Disclaimer: The Sassies were invited to The Front Climbing Club and given a tour and some climbing time. Camille and Emily left with shaking arms and a little more respect for rock climbers.

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts introduces those of all ages to art exhibits from around the world. There is something for every taste from African sculptures to Desert Photography. With admission, which is free for kids under six, the UMFA offers free family backpacks for check out that contain activities, games and puzzles to guide you on your exploration of the collections.

Our families were taken on a short tour of the museum and I was surprised to see the variety of pieces and styles represented. My two year old enjoyed trying to emulate the face on a certain blue head sculpture and seeing if he could beat mommy to the “do not touch” items.

After exploring, we were able to take part in The Utah Museum of Fine Arts 3rd Saturday activity. The museum offers free activity days designed for children 4-12 years of age year round on the 3rd Saturday of every month. The hands on activities run from 2 to 4 pm in the Emma Eccles Jones Education Center Classroom. There is no reservation required.Participation is on a first come first serve basis.

During our visit, the activity was learning about printing. We were able to go through the process of seeing one of our drawings printed on to large post cards. This was a hit with the kids and adults alike!

Allison: I’ve been before, so I knew what to expect, but I was really happy to see how crowded it was!
Marie: Beautiful scenery! I love being up in the mountains.
Rachael: Loved the atmosphere! It’s so beautiful up Provo Canyon! I also dig the artwork that they have branding the event.
Vanessa: Wow, this is a BEAUTIFUL location! Just flat out enamored (am I using the right word?) by some of the story tellers and musicians!

Allison: The storytellers, they were phenomenal.
Marie: That my kids were so enthralled with each story! They really got sucked in and listened to every minute. The Bed Time Stories were perfect for my kids.
Rachael: felt like a good parent :D (you know, taking my kids to a festival that would stretch their brains a bit)
Vanessa: The story tellers, my girls adored the mimes, the food vendors were such a great pick, everything was spaced out nicely (the tents, booths, etc.) even though there were tons of people there it didn’t feel uncomfortably packed. I also loved all the wonderful children’s books for sale.

Allison: I wasn’t sure where to go to redeem my ticket, where I should have been at any given time. It would have been nice to get a brochure in the mail ahead of time with instructions. But then again, I’m slow like that.
Marie: That I didn’t have time to be there every minute. Next year, I’ll be going for 3 days straight!
Rachael: Parking, Shuttles, Directions . . . I even brought their site up on my phone and it didn’t help me much. I don’t live in Utah County so I needed some more clear cut info.
Vanessa: The bus system, how they didn’t have signs at the festival telling you what bus to get on and no one around that knew how to help. My girls and I weren’t feeling well and we just needed to get home! Also the schedule, it wasn’t as detailed and organized as it should have been. We lost a lot of time and missed out on things we came to see because of the schedule or the volunteers not knowing the answers. Also the golf carts, they were everywhere and didn’t seem like it was necessary and it got annoying having to make sure they didn’t run us over every 5 seconds.

Allison: In a heartbeat. My kids are already begging for next summer. Can’t wait.
Marie: Yes, and I’ll be going every year now!
Rachael: Definitely, I will go back and spend more time. Once you actually get to the festival it’s amazing and I wished that we had carved out more time to stay there.
Vanessa: Yes, we will be attendees for life ALTHOUGH I will go out of my way to figure out when exactly things are so we don’t miss out this next time, even if it means tracking down the head honcho!

The Timpanogos Storytelling Festival has been around since 1990 and grown each year‚ now totalling at 26,000 attendeds. The Festival is recognized throughout the national storytelling world and is something Utahns look forward to every single year.

The festival is full of wonderful musicians, amazing story tellers, hilarious mimes and is held beautifully out in nature at the new Mt. Timpanogos Park in Provo Canyon.

So is this event Family Friendly? Is the customer service up to our standards? Did our families and did we ourselves enjoy attending? So how to you think the Sassies enjoyed it?

For many of us it was our first time to the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, will we will be back next year? This is a mixed and very honest review so you will want to check out our offical review posted this Wednesday!

I was jealous when my son got to take a fieldtrip last fall to Farnsworth Farms. They picked apples, took a hay ride, ate honey from a real honeycomb . . . the list goes on. Well, the “Sassies” got to go on a field trip of our own to check out Farnsworth Farms and loved it.

It’s local. It’s family owned. It’s just about organic. What more could you ask for? (and I saw “just about” because they have not been certified organic but follow organic farming standards. ) The best part? It’s a “pick-your-own” farm. You can grab a bag and pick your own produce right off the farm. So if you have a garden that failed you this year, or you didn’t plant one at all you can still have your very own little “harvest” moment.

They are also a cider mill. They press their apples on site and sell it right out of the store. According to Carina (@jet_set) and Allison (@petitelefant) raw cider is the only way to go.

What you’ll find on the farm: apples, eggplant, pears, peaches, peppers, plums, tomatoes, Cider mill, fresh honey, prepicked produce, gift shop, restrooms, and school tours throughout the fall.

We love Wheeler Historic Farm, or Wheeler Farm for short, and don’t get there often enough considering it’s right in our backyard and costs nothing to visit (except some stale bread for the ducks and geese). Located in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, Wheeler Farm is a wonderful way to spend a day with the kids. From climbing all over old farm equipment to checking out the farm animals (cows, chickens and pigs, oh my!) to going for a wagon ride (not free but very, very affordable), you won’t tire of things to do…though you may tire following the kids from one exciting agricultural thing to the next!

Wheeler Farm also boasts some great picnic areas, a fun little country store with treats and souvenirs, a daily cow-milking session (one of my kids’ faves), a variety of original Wheeler Farm buildings including a root cellar and outhouse and even the original home, which you can tour for a nominal fee. I look at my donation to the wagon-ride and house-tour funds as my way of keeping Wheeler Historic Farm up and running. Always happy to do my part!

On the website you’ll find a wonderfully detailed background about the history behind Wheeler Farm and some insight to what life was like for the Wheeler family. Here’s a short excerpt from the site:

The Farm is a restoration of the turn-of-the-century dairy farm of Henry J. Wheeler. Maintaining the farm presents to the public the history of Utah family agriculture. It is a representation of the rural lifestyle in Salt Lake County from 1890-1920 and presents the best farming methods of the Progressive Era. … Here you may discover the old time farm lifestyle once common for most families in Utah but which is now largely past and gone.

Wheeler Historic Farm is also an outdoor classroom that promotes discovery and inquiry into the world around us. The Farm is a part of the outdoor space you require to provide your food, air, and water. … See the animals and stroll along Little Cottonwood Creek or visit our award winning wetlands.

Wheeler Farm also offers a day camp in the summer, participation in farm chores and even Tai Chi classes! You can read more about their activities and view their calendar on their website. Allison: It’s another one of those rare places that makes me feel transported to California or New York City. In the best possible way.
Alma: Clean, fresh, and modern with a delicious display.
Carina: Beautiful space, filled with local artist displays; hip, downtown feel with lots of seating–and at the end? Glorious gelato.
Emily: A quaint little cafe holding its own next to the ever popular college hangout, Los Hermanos. I loved the artwork on the walls and especially the digital menus!
Marie: Loved the artwork on the walls and that it supports local artists.
Vanessa: The artwork caught my eye and I loved reading about the artists and knowing next time I came in they would be featuring a new one!

Alma: The gelato of course! And I consider myself a gelato snob!
Carina: The gelato is out of this world good. I was skeptical, but after trying flavor after flavor, Maestro’s really does make the best gelato in the state, hands down.
Emily: The variety of gelato flavors was definitely impressive. I had to taste test a handful before I could settle on three! My favorites were the Oreo and coconut.
Marie: Great flavors! I really couldn’t decided which one to pick, so I choose 3 different ones in one bowl!
Vanessa: The gelato of course! Such a selection of flavors and the store was very clean and quiet..

Allison: I was freezing while I ate. And it took for-ever to get my food.
Alma: No bathroom in the restaurant. It’s kind of a hike to get to the one in the building.
Carina: That I’ve never tried their crepes before that night–HUGE mistake on my part, they are from scratch, very good, and very authentic.
Emily: I thought the savory crepes could’ve used a little more “umph” to them, but perhaps I’m just remembering the non-authentic European Connection crepes…
Marie: I think the servings a little small. It’s really good and pretty worth it, but still a little pricey.
Vanessa: I think the restaurant decor itself is lacking. I loved the featured artist but the rest of the space felt very empty.

Allison: Absolutely. Seriously the best gelato ever. And I love the feel of the place, it’s completely lovely.

Emily: I would if I were in Utah Valley and wanted to go out for dessert with friends.

Allison: The teacher, she was really lovely.
Alma: I went there feeling stressed and really wound up. I felt like I didn’t have time to do it. I left feeling like a whole new, different, relaxed person. Also, even though I didn’t feel like I was getting a workout, I was sore the next day.
Carina: I like the way that Syl teaches, it’s not an ordinary yoga workout, it’s more than that.
Emily: I absolutely LOVED the Thai Therapy Yoga. It was like getting all the benefits of yoga while someone else did all the work!
Marie: I love the explanation of yoga at the beginning. Really understanding the importance of breathing. I also loved the eye mask for the end relaxation part!
Vanessa: The in-depth explanation she went into to teach us more about yoga and how peaceful I felt afterward.

Allison: I loved everything! The only thing I didn’t like is that I had to leave.

Emily: Listening to it live was even better than on my CD at home. Who would’ve thought?
Nathan: My first impression was that Jyl’s husband was very funny.
Jyl: Wow! What an amazing amount of musicians for one concert! Can’t wait to hear all the instrument.
Troy: Troy’s first three impressions (in chronological order): “Mmmmm. Smells like popcorn in here.”, “Hey, it’s getting darker.”, “Yanni cut his hair!”
Quinn: Looked like they had put a lot of work into making the stage look really cool with special effects; liked how all the members of the orchestra were raised so you could see everyone clearly.
Randy: Relaxing atmosphere.

What did you like the most?

Emily: I loved listening to the musicians battle it out on their violins, and the harpist? He was amazing! My favorite song was “Theory of Everything” sung by Leslie. Go, billowing outfit!
Nathan: I thought all of the vocalists had wonderful voices. The music was very good. I liked meeting the performers after the show and hearing about their lives and travels. Also I liked the fact that this sorta-hot-chick two rows behind us that kept hitting on me when my wife wasn’t looking… Yeah that was great.
Jyl: Besides kissing Ender’s cheek? (He’s so kissable!) I loved the violin duets, the Paraguayan harp, and hearing Yanni talk about holding on to your dreams and sharing how his dream became a reality. Finally, being able to meet and greet the singers after the concert was the cherry on the top of a very sweet evening. They were super friendly!
Troy: Where do I start? First and foremost was the sexy singers on the piano…one singer would have been great, but TWO singers was BRILLIANT! Who comes up with these things?! I loved the spotlights and solos on the individual musicians. The dueling violinists part was a highlight.The cozy meet and greet at the end was terrific.
Quinn: Liked the fun latino-style songs and the beautiful singing. I also LOVED the fan-flowing dress Leslie Mills wore during the “Theory of Everything” song. (I think I need one – yes, need, not just want one.)
Randy: I liked the Latino-style alternative rock music.

Emily: Hard to say what I didn’t like. Perhaps one of the songs? I found I preferred the songs that weren’t in English.
Nathan: I thought the show could have been improved by tastefully including some fire!
Jyl: The fact that I wore heels and got huge blisters from walking from the parking lot to the arena. I also didn’t care for the two girls when they were singing on the piano. Kinda weird.
Troy: I’ve always had an irrational fear of oboes.
Quinn: Really didn’t like the sleazy dancing that made it feel like a burlesque house. The girls were extremely talented and the show didn’t need that; felt like it decreased the quality tremendously.
Randy: Sappy love-song duets.

Emily: If I had a friend or family member in town who wanted to go, I’d be happy to attend another Yanni concert, but overall I prefer a good rock concert!

Troy: Yes. Especially if I lost my keys.

The quote above seems the perfect fit for Yanni’s latest musical endeavor, Yanni Voices. The new CD and tour feature some serious musical talent, and I’m not just talking about the singers. Don’t get me wrong, the singers were phenomenal but so were the musicians, including performances by a harpist, violinist, drummer and guitarist that left me speechless.

Here’s a little more about the “voices” you’ll hear during a Yanni Voices concert:

Nathan Pacheco: Nathan, a Utah favorite, is from Washington, DC and “possesses an operatic voice, reminiscent of his Brazilian roots, and sings with the warmth, depth and accessibility that characterizes the great pop artists.” He even writes lyrics in Italian, Portuguese and Spanish “with the passion of a poet.” You can read more about Nathan by clicking on his biography here. (By the way, I’d be okay with his serenading me anytime…just don’t tell my husband.)

Chloe: Chloe is a native of Florida and began dancing at the age of three! “By 12 years of age she was signed to a major-label recording contract with RCA records. … In the Summer of 2007, Chloe had the opportunity to perform Janis Joplin’s songs on tour with Joplin’s original band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. Leslie Mills: Leslie Mills, now one of my Twitter friends (how cool is that!), hails from Kentucky and “discovered an affinity for music at an early age, studying piano, dance and theater. She also wrote poetry as a child and began to compose songs after high school.” One of my favorite lyrics from Yanni Voices is from a “Theory of Everything,” which Leslie sings: “… And the theory of everything is nothing without love.” You can read more about Leslie by clicking on her bio here.

Ender Thomas: Perhaps I should let Jyl fill you in on Ender Thomas…she’s the one who kissed him on the cheek! Of course, I was ready to hit the dance floor with him after he showed his moves–and his voice–on stage! “Hailing from one of the most hauntingly beautiful and diverse regions on the planet, Venezuelan-born singer Ender Thomas grew up in a musical family.
