I have a confession to make. I eat a donut almost everyday. No joke. I am sure this is shocking to everyone, since I am clearly a petite little flower, who is constantly mistaken for an Olsen twin, but it’s true. I am obsessed with donuts. And Daylight Donuts is hands down my favorite donut shop in the entire state of Utah.

Have we mentioned the Bear Claw? A certain Sassy, whose name rhymes with Lindsey, said that it was so delicious, she almost swore. And she hasn’t sworn in four months! (I’m not even going to mention how weird that is.) This donut will change your life. I have even started an online petition to make the Daylight Donuts Bear Claw into the food pyramid.

And you might not know this, but it’s one of the best locations in the Salt Lake Valley to do cartwheels with your friends and family! (If only we could show you the video…you’ll just have to trust us!)

We loved the owner and her passion for donuts. It’s become a family affair, with Dave, her husband, coming into work at 2:30 AM to start making all the donuts from scratch. And you can definitely taste the love in their dough.

In fact, all this talk about these donuts makes me want to run out and get a dozen for my coworkers, right now. And by my coworkers, I mean my belly.

Emily: Wait, there’s a real, live donut shop in the Sandy/Draper area other than Beyond Glaze (which makes me gag)? Rock on! And how cute is this little shop with its tables, chairs and Diet Coke on tap!
Kim: Very bright, open, lots of space. Loved the yellow walls and simple decor. The smell was awesome and my mouth may have began watering the moment I walked in the door.
Kristina: Mmmmmm, donuts. *In my best Homer voice* The place is pretty plain, but really, what else do you need when there is a giant case of donuts in front of you?
Lindsey: I love a sweet shop with a fountain soda machine. Also? This is a great location!

Emily: Their bear claw was delicious as was their vanilla coconut cake donut. Oh, and the sprinkles and the orange cream and the fritter…all super yummy. I loved having a Diet Coke in one hand and a vanilla coconut donut in the other. Pure heaven. Plus the owner is super adorable.
Kim: Hands down the bear claw was my favorite. We learned that the secret of the bear claw is apple pie spice inside. So good. I also adored the cream filled chocolate doughnut. The cream was my favorite consistency and super delicious. I may have asked for a bite from Lindsey’s son’s cake doughnut, and it also was superb.
Kristina: THE BEAR CLAW. Seriously, your life will be changed by this donut. You will find religion after eating this donut, if you haven’t already. I think I saw a unicorn jump out of it. It was amazing. I really loved all of their yeast donuts. I’m not a huge cake donut fan, but I also loved the pumpkin donut with cream cheese frosting. The also have a fountain soda machine, which is awesome.
Lindsey: My favorite part of this whole review were the owners. Such nice people! After that, I thought the bear claw was delicious—light, yummy glaze, melt in your mouth. Thanks to Kristina for pointing out that I like yeast donuts over cake donuts. That makes donut selection a lot easier!

Emily: The only thing I didn’t really care for was this sticky bun sort of donut-y treat. It was a bit dry. By the looks of it, it should’ve been a lot gooier. Oh, wait. I’m also sad they aren’t open ’til midnight so I can get a late-night donut run in!
Kim: I didn’t like the fritter much, but I think that is more of a personal doughnut taste than anything else. My favorite doughnuts are plain Jane doughnuts.
Kristina: I did not love the sticky bun. Unfortunately, the dough was pretty dry, and it was light on the sticky part.
Lindsey: I did not like the cinnamon roll/sticky bun with walnuts. I wanted there to be more glaze and actually found it a little dry even though it was beautiful to look at.

Emily: I already have and even told my dad we’ll be going there when he comes out for a visit in June. It’s on the calendar!
Kim: Absolutely. I wish they were a little closer to my house to make picking up doughnuts for special occasions and Saturday mornings a little easier.
Kristina: Absolutely. I stop by there on a regular basis and have brought in donuts to my coworkers. They pretty much already worship me, but this just took it to a whole new level.
Lindsey: Yes! These guys have donuts for everybody. My kids loved the variety of sprinkle donuts that were available.

When David and Holly, the owners of Daylight Donuts in Sandy, moved to Utah from the East Coast, Holly said she just could not find a decent donut.

She complained to her husband “a few times” when finally he just said, “Well, let’s open one then!”

And that’s exactly what they did.

Although Daylight Donuts is a franchise with over 900 locations, they are individually operated and have the freedom to dream up new donut flavors and sweet treats—like Holly’s favorite, the pumpkin cake donut with cream cheese frosting.

Known for (and named after!) their pillowy light texture, Daylight Donuts did not disappoint. In fact, the bear claw almost had me swearing. Almost.

For Seemingly forever I have heard from lots of my friends, “You need to try Communal!” We were so lucky to be able to review such a beautiful, stylish, and delicious restaurant in our own backyard. While Communal is swanky, and you may have to sit next to your neighbor unless you plan in advance and reserve a private table, it is everything you want in a restaurant without breaking the bank. The prices are reasonable for all of the locally grown delicious food. You won’t be disappointed.

Communal is beautiful from the outside in with artwork from local artists adorning the walls. See a piece you like? You can buy it on the spot and take it home with you. Love that Communal is an art gallery and restaurant in one.

Every appetizer at Communal was delicious, from the bread to my personal favorite, the Fennel Tart.

For the seafood lovers, I couldn’t help overhear every other Sassy Oooo and Aaaaah over how delicious the salmon was. I refrained but trust in the other Sassies’ opinion.

While the Rib Eye was so pretty and the house sauce delicious, I have to admit it was not my favorite. However I would highly suggest trying the Christians Farm 100% Berkshire Pork. Have you ever had pork melt in your mouth? “Pork that melts in your mouth?” you say. Yes, that is what I said. This menu item, by far was my favorite.

We ended the evening with a sampling of desserts. While all of them delicious, and the cookies too, I found the Vanilla Pot de Creme a little too “eggy” tasting. However, the Allred Farms Apple Fritter with Apple Cider Glaze won my heart so much I asked for more. You can’t go wrong with that dessert.

I am about to tell you one of the best kept secrets Communal has to offer. Okay, not really, but More than one Sassy was heard to exclaim, “That toilet paper was AWESOME!” So I bravely asked, and an answer I had:

What was your first impression?

Cyndi: Trendy with a friendly, low key vibe. The décor was both streamlined and homelike and our greeting was extremely friendly (unlike the rushed and sometimes brisk greetings you get at more basic restaurants). From the first moment, it felt like a comfortable place to be.
Emily: Love the decor and the open kitchen! And it smells sooooo good in here! Does anyone else know this treasure is in Provo?
Gerberta: Beautiful old building, gorgeously simple interior decor. The open atmosphere inside is welcoming.
Jenny: I love walking into this restaurant. I love the service, the ambiance, the food, everything. And I LOVE that it’s in Provo!
Kim: A little smaller than I imagined it would be. Cozy. Warm. Inviting.
Lindsey: It’s kinda small? Is our whole group going to fit? Oh and, I really like the façade of the building. The logo on the door is rad. This place has GREAT artwork.
Stephanie: Mmmm…Where’s the parking? Also, I like the cool sign on the outside. Plus, the exposed kitchen in the middle of the restaurant??? It’s awesome.
Vanessa: It’s beautiful! The communual tables are not stuffed, you have room to breathe and move around. And if you still are nervous to try those types of tables there private tables as well.

What did you like the most?

Cyndi: I liked that the blend of flavors for the food was more unique than you would generally find. I felt brave enough to try things I might not otherwise have because what was offered seemed so unique and delicious. It would have felt like a shame to stick with the safe stuff. Sometimes it is easy to get into a meat and potatoes rut with food, but I liked that the server was able to fully answer our questions and describe the dishes in a way that sold them without being pushy. And, of course, everything was really delicious.
Emily: Um, what didn’t I like? Okay, maybe the lamb, but everything else was so tasty! My faves were the Tomato Jam, Mushroom Ragu, Ricotta, Crostini appetizer, some scrumptious tart appetizer, mashed potatoes, house fries, Christians Farm Berkshire pork…holy crap, it was all good!
Gerberta: I love how they purchase most of their food from local farmers. Every person we talked to was friendly and informative. The food was beautiful and tasty. I loved the salmon (in some amazing mushroom sauce) and mashed potatoes but my favorite thing was probably the house fries—they were perfectly seasoned and just the right thickness. The apple fritters were light and cinnamony and I could easily have eaten about four servings worth if I wasn’t already full from dinner.
Jenny: Where do I begin? The menu is seasonal, so it’s nice to see what’s available to order. The salmon never disappoints. My favorite surprise from our review night was the Spinach & Kale Caesar Salad (I’m STILL thinking about it). Also, it needs to be said: Communal knows how to WORK a potato—in many delicious ways.

Kim: I loved almost everything that passed my lips. From the soda that I bummed off of Steph to the mashed potatoes that I wanted more and more of (and I am not even a fan of mashed potatoes!) You can’t go wrong with anything on this menu.
Lindsey: While looking at the menu, I just couldn’t decide what to get. I texted my brother in DC (former BYU student and Communal connoisseur) and he texted back with one word: “POTATOES.” Well, it turns out we ordered every single potato on the menu and man oh man, they were incredible. I fell in love with the Boulangère Potatoes long before they were served because our server (who could recognize that I was struggling with what to order) gave us the folklore of said potatoes…and I love a good story. Apparently, long ago in France, the town bakeries were all used by the townspeople to cook the dinner meal in their ovens which were still hot from cooking bread all day. The meats were put on the top shelf of the oven and the potatoes under them to ensure they caught all the delicious meat drippings. Let’s just say that Communal’s Boulangère Potatoes did not disappoint legend.
Stephanie: Honestly, that is a hard question. There were about 5 things I liked the most. First, our waiter, or experience coordinator, or food service professional was just wonderful. He was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, which is a must. I truly enjoyed the lamb. It is difficult to make perfectly seasoned lamb (in my opinion) and this didn’t disappoint. I quite possibly fell in love with the Boulangère potatoes and the vanilla pot de creme is literally the thing that dreams are made of. If your dreams are filled with awesome
Vanessa: The food; quality, flavors, perfection in cooking, stories behind the dishes, uniquness in how they were prepared. The customer service: superb, helpful, geniune, really blown away. How you can tell the owners love what they do, love Provo, love food, love having people in their resturant.

Cyndi: The prices. Although the food was delicious and the ambiance friendly and unique, it is definitely a special occasion kind of place for most budgets rather than a spur-of-the-moment Friday night date decision or an option for a family eating out. The smaller size of the restaurant requires guests to have to plan ahead of time to dine there in order to get a spot. Between the prices and the availability factor, it is a bummer that such good food is not as accessible.
Emily: Probably that it’s in Provo and with I-15 construction, that means an hour drive. Also, I’m not a fan of the whole communal seating thing, so I’d have to get a reservation for a more private table (and there are only a couple of those). I do remember not loving the steak, which is sad because I’m a huge fan of a good steak. Pallet’s is still my fave of all time (so far).
Gerberta: I didn’t like how the sides were a separate cost from the main courses. Also, the cost was definitely more than I would pay for a typical dinner out (but reasonable for a special occasion).
Jenny: My very favorite drink—sparkling water—is not on the menu. Sparkling water with lime is the perfect drink, and Communal is my favorite place to eat…I wish the twain would meet.
Kim: Honestly? I can’t think of one thing that I did not enjoy at Communal, and believe me I tried it all, a few times.
Lindsey: I wasn’t a huge fan of the steak—which is usually my go-to ordering option. I found the steak served too rare for my liking.
Stephanie: I wasn’t a huge fan of the bread pudding. It wasn’t bad, just more french toast like. We didn’t have to sit in the communal seating area but I imagine I would not care for it. But, I will say the chairs in that area are not cramped together and seems spacious. Plus, you can reserve a private table.
Vanessa: The brussell sprouts; I am mad at myself for not sending them back and letting them know of the problem. They were quite awful and it must have been a big mistake that they were sent out like that. I also felt like the main dishes available were all quite heavy sounding; I wish they would have had one option that was lighter.

Would you refer Communal to a friend?

Cyndi: I would absolutely refer this business to a friend, but definitely with the caveat that it is pricier. For a comfortable, delicious experience though, it can’t be beat.
Emily: Heck yes! I’ve already told a few about it and plan to go there to celebrate the next special occasion…like surviving 24 hours without wanting to duct tape my children to the ceiling fan.
Gerberta: Absolutely! This is the perfect place for a nicer date night or lunch with friends.
Jenny: Of course. This is always my first recommendation for dinner in Provo.
Kim: I would most definitely. It is a beautiful restaurant and would be perfect for celebrating an anniversary. I liked that private tables can be reserved in advance for such occasions.
Lindsey: YES! The husband and I have already decided it will be the place for his birthday dinner.
Stephanie: Yes. And my husband too. I already told him we need to go back there for a date. I’d go tonight if he’s game.
Vanessa: Yes, to the right person. The person who loves community, food, quality, fabulous customer service and who is up for trying something a bit new.

A cupcake war that is! This coming Sunday, April 8th, you’re going to want to wrap up your delicious Easter dinner with a real treat. Our very own Megan from The Sweet Tooth Fairy will be featured on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars at 8pm EST.

Now, I am a huge fan of Sweet Tooth Fairy (you can the Sassies’ review here) and not just because she truly makes the best cake bites around. Megan is honestly one of the nicest, most giving people I know. She is always giving back to the community whenever and wherever she can. I kinda think we’re lucky to call Megan and her super sweet Sweet Tooth Fairy cupcakeries Utah locals.

Of course, there are a few locations out of state, but that’s beside the point. As long as I can get my mouth around a cakebite or two (or three or four), I’m good.

The other reason I love The Sweet Tooth Fairy? Her bakeries (or cupcakeries as I prefer to call them) are super inviting. From the cute candy jars lining the shelves to the adorable aprons to the overall vintage feel, it’s a great place for a little dessert with girlfriends OR my own girls.

Emily: As long as this location has cake bites, VaNIElla cupcakes and peanut butter cupcakes, I’m good. Oh, look! It does!
Gerberta: I love the colors and the vintage look and feel of the store. Everything in the display case looked worthy of a taste!
Jenny: *sigh* I love this place. It’s so inviting and clean and lovely.
Kim: I always love how clean and fresh the bakery feels and looks. Also the smell. Yumm.
Lindsey: I always love how bright, cheerful and welcoming Sweet Tooth Fairy is. Great colors. Beautiful cupcakes.
Stephanie: I liked the location. Right next to several restaurants and a movie theater. I always enjoy the interior of Sweet Tooth Fairys…they are bright, clean, and sparkly.
Vanessa: I really like how Megan designs her locations—the colors, old time photos on the wall (with her kiddos in them!), seating, cases, etc. Really perfect.

Emily: Hmmm…the chocolate cake bites followed by the fairfetti cake bites followed by the salted caramel cake bites followed by the VaNIElla cupcake followed by the peanut butter cupcake followed by the news that Megan is going to be on Cupcake Wars on Sunday!
Gerberta: Their cupcakes are, hands down, the best I’ve ever had. The cake bites will always keep me coming back for more; no other place can make them like they do here. My favorites were the Grasshopper, Salted Caramel and Double Fudge flavors. Heaven! The AlmEnjoy cookie was awesome. As a bonus, parking was available right out front.
Jenny: I always like seeing the new flavors they have available, and I’m always happy to see the Salted Caramel Cake Bite. The egg-shaped sugar cookies decorated like Easter eggs were cute. I like how the employees are so helpful and friendly.
Kim: Hands down my favorite item from The Sweet Tooth Fairy are the cake bites.
Lindsey: Kim and I could only stay for a few minutes, but I noticed something I have never noticed before at Sweet Tooth Fairy—a little history of how they got started hanging on the wall. I loved the stories of little Megan learning to cook. It was endearing.
Stephanie: I always enjoy a good cake bite. I think the Fairyfetti kind is my favorite. It is filled with amazing vanilla goodness. I can’t resist. Also…the boxes the 24 cakebites come in??? Beyond adorable.
Vanessa: I have had superb customer service 90% of the time at Sweet Tooth Fairy; you can tell they put a lot of care into who they hire. I really love the cake bites, bars, cookies and cupshakes.

Emily: I was not really a fan of the two cookies I tried (AlmEnjoy and the frosted sugar cookie), but my kids had no problem eating them!
Gerberta: I was too stuffed to try one of everything.
Jenny: Bummed I couldn’t get the internets to bow to my whim and let me skype with Megan.
Kim: I HATE that chocolate chip cake bites are not offered year around. As in, it pains me.
Lindsey: Until just recently, I have always struggled with too much frosting on these cupcakes which made me feel like the cake-to-frosting ratio was off. Then I discovered that you can rip the top off and flip it upside down back onto the cupcake to create a cupcake sandwich. Since then, I have never struggled with eating a cupcake. That said, I would take a salted caramel cake bite over a cupcake any day. They are magically delicious.
Stephanie: My giant egg-shaped sugar cooking had a coconut flavor to it. Had I known that I would have skipped the cookie. I am not a fan of the coconut.
Vanessa: The cupcakes are okay but not fantastic/superb/divine/etc. like a lot of her other products. I still pick them up for neighbors, my girls, etc. But I personally will chose a bar or cakes bites over them any day.

Gerberta: No question – I would, I have and I wholeheartedly do.

Lindsey: Yes! I don’t think you have lived until you have the peanut butter cupcake (eaten like a sandwich of course—see my entry above) and the peppermint cake bites (seasonal) in addition to the salted caramel cake bites. Have mercy.
Stephanie: Yes. Sweet Tooth Fairy shops are fun places to go grab a sweet treat with a friend, date, or little kiddies. Deliciousness for all.

We Sassies have mentioned The Sweet Tooth Fairy more than a few times, and for good reason: the success of this business is a prominent fixture in Utah, and Megan – The Sweet Tooth Fairy herself – has some new, exciting announcements to make!

The Sweet Tooth Fairy business has been expanding. There are currently NINE locations in Utah, making your ability to acquire Cakebites that much better. Not only can you stop in for a sweet treat anywhere from Layton to St. George, now you can get your fix when you’re visiting Scottsdale, Arizona! That’s right, this Utah original can now be found in the Zocallo Plaza in Scottsdale, and before too long another location will be opening in Southlake, Texas. Congratulations, Scottsdale and Southlake! You’ll have to let us know what your favorite flavor is!

And: next Sunday, April 8th, 8:00 P.M. ET, be certain to tune in to The Food Network’s Cupcake Wars to see Megan Brown in action! That’s right, Megan applied last fall to be a contestant on Cupcake Wars, and the time has finally come for her episode to air. We are so excited to watch Megan work her magic in the Cupcake Wars kitchen. We’ll be cheering her on, hoping she wins! Fingers crossed!

I would say that one of Salt Lake’s newest best-kept secrets is Pallet, but the fact is that even by word-of-mouth, people have found this restaurant and they love it.

When we arrived for a review, we did have to wait a little while for a table to open up, but that gave us time to take in the unique décor of the restaurant itself. We learned the building was constructed in 1901 and the location of the restaurant is that of an old loading dock, which lends itself to a play on the word Pallet.

Once we sat at our table, I think we (as a group) were disappointed to have been sat at a communal-style table; while the idea of eating at a table shared with others isn’t necessarily bothersome, our particular table was simply very crowded. Communal seating can work as long as you don’t feel like you’re sitting on top of each other!

The menu at Pallet is very impressive. Items on the menu are sourced locally or regionally where possible, but not to sacrifice quality. The fact that the salmon I ordered had come from Scotland was pretty impressive, and for the record, it may have been the most delicious salmon I’ve ever had in my life—and certainly the biggest-sized portion for the cost. Everything I tasted that night was enjoyable, but what is most memorable (beyond the salmon) are the gnocchi and the epic stout chocolate cake.

I would definitely return to Pallet. I think it’s worth the drive downtown and the ambiance is enjoyable, though in making a reservation I would request a private table. And, of course, I’d just have to remember to move my car after 90 minutes so as to avoid a(nother) parking ticket.

Emily: Oooh, I love the brick building and the rustic, old-style decor. I feel like I’m totally hip sitting here waiting for a table. Man, this place is humming!

Kristina: The restaurant is very cool and trendy. I loved all the lighting and the feel of the place. If it’s good enough for Phil Dunphy, it’s good enough for me.
Lindsey: The lighting at Pallet is absolutely show stopping and brilliant. It is a small restaurant and feels totally exclusive.
Vanessa: Love the location, parking was available at a busy time and the inside was gorgeous! I mean I think I found the style that is completely me: refurbished wood, brick, mason jars, beautiful mirror behind the bar.

What did you like the most?

Char I liked the atmosphere. The gnocchi was delicious.
Emily: The cozy atmosphere and decor; the gnocchi, truffle fries, sweet beets, steak and warm oatmeal bar; the location. Oh, and seeing Ty Burrell. Even better? Seeing Jenny see Ty Burrell (aka Phil Dunphy).

Kristina: My steak was awesome. Perfectly cooked. The main reason I got the steak was because it was paired with blue cheese macaroni, and I am as obsessed with blue cheese as I am with The Hoff. And the croquettes did not disappoint. Really, all of the food was divine. I don’t think there was a single item we tried that I did not like.
Lindsey: My $27 steak was huge and delicious. I loved the salt seasoning they used. The gnocchi was the best I have had. Ever.
Vanessa: The owner, the staff, the look of the restaurant, the location and the vibe of the place. Food-wise I enjoyed how there was a story behind some of the dishes (salmon all the way from Scotland) and the fresh in-season combinations. I was very impressed with the food, goat cheese mousse under a bed of beets, perfect alioi with the fries, scallops seared to perfection, delightful.

What didn’t you like?

Char I don’t like sitting that close to people. The ladies next to us were giving us MAJOR stink eye the entire night. And my chicken was just OK. I also didn’t like the parking situation. 90 minute parking = tickets and you probably won’t be in and out in under 90 minutes, so…
Emily: I didn’t love the communal seating, or at least how super cozy and communal our strip of table was. And the way the chocolate mousse was piped on the chocolate tart was super unappetizing even though it tasted good.

Kristina: This seems to be a new theme with restaurants, but I am not a fan of communal tables. Pallet does have several non-communal seating areas, but we were seated at a table with other diners. Lindsey said that the lady sitting next to me had some seizure-inducing eye rolls going on when we were talking. Not really the best environment for a nice, intimate dinner out.
Lindsey: Our table and that of the customers seated next to us were touching…which means we were basically sitting with strangers who were not my biggest fans. The eye rolls were at least in the triple digits by the time our third course arrived. Oh and then there is a fact that we ALL got parking tickets. BOO!
Vanessa: Char’s chicken dish looked a bit sad, they need to spruce that one up. Also in two of our dishes one was supposed to have Brie and the other Prosciutto and the amount that was put on our plate was really laughable. Even if it is more of an understated ingredient to the dish it needs to be more prominent. I did not like our seating arrangement; some of the seating is long tables were you are sitting next to strangers on benches. I don’t like accidentally elbowing people and feeling like I am invading their conversations and it was hard to hear eachother. I really disliked how since it is more relaxed there, the service is not very fast…we didn’t make our 90-minute parking times so some of us got a pretty ticket on our windshield, not cool. We also saw a celeb but my dinner mates just spent the night updating their phones about it; it was not the most fun I have had out to dinner. ;) But I still love them.

Emily: Totally have already. And I plan to go there for lunch with a friend.

Kristina: Absolutely. Aside from the communal seating, I loved the entire experience. I am already planning on heading back for brunch. In a time when many restaurants fail, I can say that Pallet will be around for the long haul.
Lindsey: Yes. I am bringing my husband back for sure on a ritzy date night…but we will be asking for an exclusive table so that no one rolls their eyes at my exuberance over the food and dramatic story telling.
Vanessa: YES! Oh yes I would. A few days later I set up a girls lunch to go and show it off. If you were going at night I would warn people about the parking. I would also tell them to try to get seating where they have their own table. But the vibe and the quality of the food is really some of the best I have had since moving to Utah.
