Because the Sassies feel it’s important to spend as much time as possible with their families during the holiday season, they will be taking two weeks off to “review” Christmas and New Year’s with all its food, friends and fun. Allison: Looked like a great little store front on a farm.
Carina: I almost missed it on the road, you have to keep an eye out, but seeing an oasis of farm in the middle of expanding suburbia was comforting.
Emily: A very simple yet friendly and welcoming farm. Loved the owners—extremely down to earth!
Jyl: Wow! This is super close to my house!
Quinn: Quaint & sweet.
Rachael: How cool it was that there was this big farm right in the middle of what seems to be a bustling part of Sandy and Draper. I had never noticed it!
Vanessa: Home. We come here very often and places like this, little farm stands, pick your own produce fields make me feel like home.

Allison: The family feel of the business.
Carina: The commitment that the Farnsworth’s have to what they’re doing, they’re passionate and dedicated, and I dig that.
Emily: Definitely the cider! And Livi loved it too…I think she “sampled” about a gallon’s worth that night! Of course, the “u-pick” option is wonderful too. I can’t wait to try that out with my kids!
Jyl: I loved the tour of the mill and how friendly the owners were. Wait! How could I forget? The Israeli melon ROCKED MY WORLD!
Quinn: Sampling a lot of their yumminess, like the Israeli melon – SCRUMPTIOUS – and their delicious apple cider!!! Ooh, la, la!
Rachael: That you can pick your own produce. I think that’s fun for the kids and as fresh as you can get. I was also intrigued by the honeycomb that they had in the store. I’ve got to go back and buy one!
Vanessa: The feeling of community, the love they have for their business, the joy and pride they put into all of their products and activities. My kids and I go there almost bi-weekly to buy cider and produce and mosie around the small apple orchard.

Allison: I loved it all.
Carina: It’s a little far for me to drive to get their delicious fresh produce (I live in Utah County.)
Emily: The location was too hidden away. Living in Sandy we’ve always driven by Farnsworth Farms but never really “seen” it.
Jyl: The stickers we got on the bottoms of our shoes and the dust.
Quinn: I thought it was sad that they’ve had to sell off so much of their land just to stay afloat. Made me mad that the community hasn’t supported them better in the past, but I’m excited that people are starting to come around & really support local farmers. I was also mad at the squash crops that were ruined last year by squash bugs—stupid bugs; I love squash.
Rachael: I’d love to see more products/variety in their store. It’s a little far for me, I’d love to make it a regular stop!
Vanessa: That they need more business. It breaks my heart to not see a wonderful company, family and high quality products not being embraced and supported by it’s community.

Emily: Yes! I found out they have lots of great family activities so we’ll be back for the fall festival and maybe even “Charlotte’s Web” movie night!
Jyl: Absolutely! It was a fantastic family activity. The kids loved it!
Quinn: Absolutely! I’m very excited to go back for more produce & the raspberry seedless jam they were selling is like licking up a glop of heaven. Their fall activities sound like a lot of fun, too.
Rachael: Yes! I confused a cantaloupe for an Israeli melon last time and I’ve got to get one of those!

This week’s visit to Farnsworth Farms & Cider Mill was a treat for the entire family. Located at 11228 South 700 East in Sandy, you’ve probably passed it a million times. In fact, I’ve lived just minutes away for almost 10 years and never realized what a treasure I had in my own backyard! As a fruit and vegetable lover (nay, fanatic!), I was thrilled to receive an invitation to visit the farm.

The farm is directly adjacent to busy 700 East, but as you drive down the long driveway to get to the store you quickly forget the hustle and bustle of suburban living. I guess I’ve never visited simply because I never knew I was welcome. But as it turns out, scores of school-aged children visit each year as the Farnsworth family is eager to share the experience of living and working on a farm. Not only do school kids visit, but the farm is open to the general public as well. The pick-your-own crops can vary from year to year, but they try to plant things that are popular each year. So if you can’t plant your own garden (or if perhaps your talents lie elsewhere) you can still have your own personal harvest without ever having to pick weeds!

The day we visited we sampled delicious slices of an Israeli melon—a melt-in-your-mouth treat that is as sweet as candy. Also available in the store were various fruit and vegetables brought in from other local farms. The fresh apple cider is pressed on site and is worth the effort to stop in all on its own. We even saw the cider plant and learned how this delectable liquid is made. The tour was engaging and interesting for both the adults and kids. (My eight-year-old son was especially proud because he correctly guessed that each bin can hold 800 apples!) Another favorite moment was when we got to try the fresh apple cider (available in filtered or unfiltered). It was so good that we took a gallon home and my two kids finished off the entire jug in a matter of days.

The last part of our tour consisted of a hayride through the orchard. We sang songs, learned about the trees, and even found out the difference between hay and straw (answer: for different ends of the horse!). A large portion of the orchard was replanted in the spring of 2008. These little trees will take a few years to grow and begin producing but there are still plenty of apples to go around.

Farnsworth Farms is well worth a visit, whether as an educational field trip or a chance to purchase farm-fresh and local produce. Seasonal fruits include apples, eggplant, pears, peaches, peppers, plums, tomatoes, and more.

I was jealous when my son got to take a fieldtrip last fall to Farnsworth Farms. They picked apples, took a hay ride, ate honey from a real honeycomb . . . the list goes on. Well, the “Sassies” got to go on a field trip of our own to check out Farnsworth Farms and loved it.

It’s local. It’s family owned. It’s just about organic. What more could you ask for? (and I saw “just about” because they have not been certified organic but follow organic farming standards. ) The best part? It’s a “pick-your-own” farm. You can grab a bag and pick your own produce right off the farm. So if you have a garden that failed you this year, or you didn’t plant one at all you can still have your very own little “harvest” moment.

They are also a cider mill. They press their apples on site and sell it right out of the store. According to Carina (@jet_set) and Allison (@petitelefant) raw cider is the only way to go.

What you’ll find on the farm: apples, eggplant, pears, peaches, peppers, plums, tomatoes, Cider mill, fresh honey, prepicked produce, gift shop, restrooms, and school tours throughout the fall.
