Char: SO CUTE! Why have I never crossed the street from Material Girls to check this place out???
Emily: Oh my gosh! Look how cute the decor is! And the cupcakes? Beautiful. Wait, what?!?! You have Italian sodas and frozen lemonade? SOLD!
Evonne: To-die-for decor and a perfect spot to take my little lady.
Jenny: I’m really impressed with the location of the store, and I’m surprised at how big the space is.
Kristina: The shop is really fun and adorable. It would be a great place for a shower or party.
Stephanie: I loved the high ceilings and whimsical decor. It has the feeling of an upscale boutique filled with the most lovely goodies. I would say it is a little on the side of fairytale like.
Vanessa: So excited to have the Sassies come try this place—I want to show it off to them! Love all the places to sit, cute decor, birthday table in the back and friendly smiles at the counter.

What did you like the most?

Char: I loved the atmosphere and the decor. I also enjoy the denseness of my raspberry chocolate cupcake.
Emily: The cake part of the cupcakes was my favorite thing ever. Super dense and super moist. The peanut butter one was delicious (I had to try this later because Steph wouldn’t share), as was the Almond Joy cupcake. The frozen lemonade was delicious too! Another favorite: hosting a birthday party there. My girls would love it!
Evonne: I loved that there was a spot all the girls could sit around and talk over a sweet treat.
Jenny: The drink options. I had the hot chocolate, and though I couldn’t finish it, I liked the idea of getting cocoa, or an Italian Soda, or lemonade. The chocolate raspberry cupcake was tasty.
Kristina: I loved the Snickerdoodle cupcake, and their French macaroons. I don’t normally like coconut, but their coconut tasted like a unicorn in my mouth.
Stephanie: I had a peanut butter cup cupcake. It was actually like eating a peanut butter cup. AMAZING. And the cake itself was truly the best cupcake I have ever eaten. I typically do not enjoy cupcakes. That cupcake changed my mind.
Vanessa: The Raspberry Chocolate cupcake; the flavors and choices of chocolate makes it a masterpiece. The brownies are yummy, the hot chocolate has ganache in it and the selection of flavors with the cupcakes is great.

Char: I was not a fan of the cake bites, but that’s a personal (bizarre texture-related) problem.
Emily: Her version of the cake bite wasn’t my favorite. The taste and texture was just a little bit off for me.
Evonne: I personally wish I could have stayed longer to try more stuff. :)
Jenny: I had a tiny bite of a . . . what was it? Like, a cakepop without a stick . . . it was super dry.
Kristina: I really wish they sold milk. Their cupcakes were quite rich, and a nice glass of milk would have made everything better.
Stephanie: The coconut cookie thing I ate. Mostly because I don’t like coconut. It gets stuck in the back of my throat. Not my favorite.
Vanessa: The cake bites. Sweet Tooth Fairy perfected them and I don’t think any other nearby bakery should even try. The consistency was off for me with these cake bites. Also their carrot cake cupcake needs to be re-done I think.

Char: Absolutely. The options for fancy and fab cupcakes in this neck of the woods are slim.
Emily: Already did. And that friend left a half dozen One Sweet Slice cupcakes on our doorstep a few days later. It was awesome.
Evonne: The cupcakes I tried, I loved…and I would most definitely send someone their way for a special occasion cake. Those cakes are off-the-chart amazing.
Jenny: Sure.
Kristina: Yes! I think their cupcakes were delicious, and they were reasonably priced. The shop is also really cute.
Stephanie: YES! I have convinced my sister-in-law that we need to take her little girls there for fun. They would love it.
Vanessa: Yes, I have many times! For cupcakes, personalized birthday cakes, to just hang out with friends and for wedding cakes. Owner is wonderful, cupcakes are moist and delectable and customer service is always perfect.

By now you have read about our secret adventures reviewing City Cakes & Café in Salt Lake City, Utah. What you may not have realized, which many of us didn’t, is that the baked goods are served up entirely vegan and/or gluten free. I know what you are thinking, “How is it even possible to bake without butter?” Trust me, I’m still wondering…you know, since butter makes the world go round. Well, everywhere besides at City Cakes.

While the Sassies had mixed reviews about the overall look, feel, and taste of the Café and products, I think we all agreed it is a great concept for those who don’t worship bacon on a regular basis. I mean, unless they make vegan bacon… (Do they? Well if they do I am sure it is minus the pig and therefore not as piggy or delicious.)

But one thing we all agreed upon is the use of the word “moist” in our video review. And even though Webster (the dictionary guy, not the 80’s TV guy) is probably rolling over in his grave at our possible overuse and giggle fest over the wor We are sure you will LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

What was your first impression?

Char: What’s that smell?
Evonne: I loved that it felt cozy enough to sit and talk with a girlfriend and not feel like you were rushed.
Jenny: Cute and cozy-looking cafe.
Kim: The outside of City Cakes & Cafe is super fun and modern. Loved the garden seating, perfect for reading a book or watching a sunset. I also liked that it felt warm and cozy inside like grandma’s house.
Kristina: The bakery was cute and welcoming. There were a lot of table and comfy chairs. There was a bit of a weird smell that we couldn’t figure out what it was. It might have been a kind of tea or wheat grass.
Lindsey: Walking through the front door, there was a really strange aroma that was unpleasant for me. I still cannot place what the smell was, but it was hard to get out of my head for the rest of the night.
Stephanie: Weird location for a bakery but I’ll bite. And all the baked goods look fabulous for not having bacon or any sort of delicious animal product in them.
Vanessa: That their logo was super cute, the cases were really full on a Saturday night. I loved the location AND the space (lots of room to sit down on a date or with groups).

What did you like the most?

Char: The girls that were working were delightful and helpful and the takeout boxes were darling. Also my cinnamon roll.
Evonne: I loved the carrot cake cupcake, and a close second was my orange poppy seed cupcake.
Jenny: The ginger cookie—so soft, really ginger-y, great size. The girls behind the counter were very familiar with all the baked goods in the case, seemed to really know their stuff, and were helpful with sharing the ingredients. I also liked the seating area, which was a nice place to relax and chat. I wish I would have gotten a cup of tea to enjoy.
Kim: The frosting.
Kristina: My banana cupcake was excellent. It wasn’t just good for a vegan cupcake, but it was good for any cupcake. It was moist and flavorful. I also liked the cinnamon bun. The outside was a bit hard, but once you got past the outer layer, it was really gooey and nice.I also had some of Vanessa’s tofu cheesecake, which I was fully expecting to hate, but I actually really liked it.
Lindsey: The carrot cake cupcake was really good—flavorful, moist and rich. The Ginger Softie gingerbread cookie was also delightful and chewy. I would not be sad if either one of those items ended up on my dessert agenda.
Stephanie: The cinnamon roll was actually really good after I got past the outer layer (which was a little dry). But my little sister (who is vegan) LOVED the sugar cookie and peanut butter bar I took over to her. She said it was some of the best vegan baked goods she has ever had
Vanessa: Me oh my, the carrot cake, THE CARROT CAKE! Also the citrus poppy seed cupcake and the cinnamon roll. The seating, location of the store, the space and how it was pretty easy to find parking. I also thought the prices were really great on everything from the full cakes to the cookies.

Char: The smell and the chocolate donut.
Evonne: I didn’t try anything I didn’t like, but I know a few ladies said that their stuff was dry.
Jenny: The triple chocolate brownie, which tasted like a diet-y chocolate something, not necessarily a brownie that I’d be used to. And I don’t know what happened, but after about ten minutes, my allergies went wild and didn’t quit until I left. (Old building? Not really sure.)
Kim: I need to preface this with the fact that I am not vegan. However, I do eat rather healthy and avoid a lot of refined sugars and heavy oils, etc. I had the notion that this bakery offered “traditional” goodies as well as “vegan” goodies. However, when we got to the counter there were only vegan and gluten-free options. I felt mislead. I went in open minded and decided to try the vegan treats of wonder. They were, well, not very good, at least not the items that didn’t have any natural fruits and spices to liven them up. I had the marble cupcake and it was -not- good. The frosting was the only thing saving the poor little cake. I also tried a bite of the orange poppy seed cupcake, and it had great orange flavor which kind of saved it. I also had a bite of the carrot cupcake and it was very good, again though I feel it was saved by the natural flavors of the spices and sweetness of the carrot. I did try the ‘cheese’cake and discovered upon pondering that it indeed did not have any cheese in it. It was made with tofu. I actually didn’t hate this cake, it had good flavor, and if I were vegan that would be my treat of choice.
Kristina: I think we all had a lot of preconceived notions about a vegan bakery. And unfortunately, most of the items just weren’t great. The sugar cookie had a weird taste and wasn’t very flavorful. The peanut butter bar was very dry. Many of the chocolate items had strange aftertastes.
Lindsey: Many of the pieces I tried I did not care for. Either the texture was off or the goodie lacked in flavor. On the door of the bakery there is a sign that says “Traditional and Vegan Baked Goods” and yet, when we went to order we were told that everything was vegan. As a non-vegan, that was very disappointing.
Stephanie: Broken record alert… PARKING!!! I seriously am meant to never leave suburbia. I like to have parking where and when I want it. I am spoiled like that. And though I truly adored the cinnamon roll… the outside was a little dry.
Vanessa: How it is called CITY CAKES and they only had two cakes you could buy slices of and they refused to bring out another cake we really wanted to try. The customer service: they were just interested in hanging out in the back and getting ready to close. Also, I eat vegan desserts on a regular basis so I feel like I am a fair judge of vegan desserts so I genuinely love and buy them often. But I did not enjoy the chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter bar and chocolate cheesecake.

Would you refer City Cakes & Cafe to a friend?

Char: I would probably only refer it to a friend who was interested in the vegan/gluten-free aspect of it.
Evonne: I would probably refer someone who is vegan, but if they don’t care about that stuff…probably not.
Jenny: Sure, particularly if they’re looking for vegan treats.
Kim: If they were vegan or gluten-free eaters then yes! The place seemed to be quite happening. We were there for maybe 30 minutes and it was fairly late on a Saturday and lots of people were coming in, so it seems to be a very niche bakery in a very busy part of Salt Lake.
Kristina: I think that if you normally eat vegan items, and aren’t usually tasting the flavor of things like eggs and butter, then this is a great option. There were definitely some items that were really good and delicious. But as someone who has no problem eating tiny, delicious animals, I would never seek out a vegan bakery.
Lindsey: No I would not. Most of the things I tried were not worth the effort to go inside … and then there’s the smell.
Stephanie: Yes. I think if the friend or family member was a vegan or thinking of joining the ranks of the bacon-less, it is a great place to visit.
Vanessa: Ahh…yes and no. No to my non-vegan friends even though I regularly do try to get people to try different things, but this place didn’t have enough things that I loved. Maybe yes to my vegan or health-conscious friends and I would tell them SPECIFICALLY what to get. But I would also tell them that I enjoy the vegan cookies from Whole Foods and the vegan desserts from Raw Melissa quite a bit more.

The Sassies had the opportunity to surreptitiously visit a local vegan bakery, City Cakes & Cafe, in the downtown Salt Lake City area. We put on our “We Hate Eating Animals or Their Byproducts” t-shirts and made a visit on the sly.

City Cakes & Cafe is well known for their vegan baked goods. As well as being a bakery, they are also a coffee shop and full espresso bar, and they make vegan and traditional wedding cakes.  City Cakes & Cafe opened in 2010 and has been receiving rave reviews from the vegetarian, vegan and meat eater communities. The bakery makes all of their items from scratch, and they also provide organic coffee an tea. The bakery also provides gluten free items and can accommodate other allergies.

City Cakes & Cafe is open for breakfast providing freshly made waffles, and for lunch with a Soup of the Day to satisfy your lunch time needs.

City Cakes & Cafe makes homemade vegan brownies, cookies, cakes, cinnamon rolls, fruit tarts, muffins and scones, and even at 8 PM at night, had a fairly large selection left in their case. They offer free Wi-Fi and comfy sitting areas so you can stay and lounge while eating your delicious goodies.

City Cakes & Cafe is open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 9 PM; Saturday, 8 AM to 9 PM; and Sundays, 9 AM t0 4 PM. They are located at:

None of the Sassies are vegans, nor vegetarians, and were a bit wary to try baked goods that didn’t have  butter, eggs or other animal-y goodness in them. Stay tuned for the reviews on Wednesday to see if they met our somewhat low expectations or exceeded them!

This week the Sassies have taken you into one of our favorite local grocery stores, Harmons.  It is easy to see why the Sassies raved about it on Wednesday.  And why Harmons inspired the recipes Vanessa and I posted on Tuesday and Thursday.   We learned so much visiting their newest Super location in Farmington, Utah.  Did you know  Harmons is so much MORE than your average grocery store?

It’s Bob and Randy Harmon treating their employees and shoppers like family.

It’s a cooking school to help the culinarily gifted and challenged alike.

It’s your specialty cheese store… with an expert on hand to help you make the right decision

Harmons is your local fish market with FRESH fish flown in from around the world. And crab legs that would make even Sebastian jealous. (I had to throw in a random Little Mermaid reference)

It’s your local butcher, baker, and candlestick maker. Okay… so they don’t actually make candlesticks there but maybe I just gave them their next big idea.

The Sassies learned that when it comes to quality service, selection, and products, Harmons is top notch! (We also learned that making Vanessa’s baby into a spokesperson for Diet Coke is FUN and adorable.)  Now what are you waiting for?  You have some learning to do.

What was your first impression?

THE SCOOP

Carly: Is this really a grocery store? It was so spacious and nice! Definitely not your ordinary food shopping experience. Everything was so clean and fresh looking. I could not wait to see it all.
Evonne: I never thought a grocery store could be so gorgeous.
Lindsey: The Farmington location is enormous with hand-painted signs over each aisle painted by a hired artist. Walking in makes you feel like you are about to have an experience and not just running errands.
Michelle: This place is huge and amazing! It’s like the Mall of America of grocery stores!
Stephanie: When I first walked into the Farmington Harmons I was in awe of the size, setup, and overall feel of the store. It felt more like a gourmet market than a grocery store.
Vanessa: The new store in Farmington is a foodie’s dream; it is just like the Harmons by me (the Draper location off I-15 and Bangerter). The employees seem to love what they do and treat the customers accordingly.

What did you like the most?

Carly: The gelato they make was amazing. I love that they let you try samples of the salads at the deli and their produce is so fresh and delicious. Also don’t get me started on the breads they make at the store. So good! Everyone was very kind and knowledgeable. It was fun meeting Bob and Randy Harmon and really seeing they mean what they say when it comes to having fresh and quality products in there stores.
Evonne: With Harmons there is nothing not to love, but my favorite might be either their selection of cheese or their most delightful buttercream maple bar!
Lindsey: I love going to the bakery at every Harmons I have ever been to. They always have delish samples of the breads they are making fresh that day. When we toured the Farmington location, I fell in love with the White Chocolate Pecan. Good heavens. It is good. I also learned about the Ron Matik oranges (best oranges ever but they are out of season until about October—my 2-year-old cried when I told him) and the dry aged meat. The dry aged meats did not disappoint. We had the dry aged bone in rib eye for Father’s Day and I swear I earned some major coolness points from my culinary-minded hubby for suggesting those bad boys.
Michelle: The in-house steamed shrimp was to die for. They have totally ruined me. I cannot go back to regular, old store-bought shrimp. I bought King Crab from the South Jordan Harmons and it was the biggest I’ve seen and delicious! I was also really impressed that one of the employees offered to get me an umbrella when I was walking to my car because it was raining. Oh, and the hand-trimmed chicken breast. Thanks for doing the dirty work for me!
Stephanie: Harmons has long been one of my most favorite grocery stores so it is really hard to pick just one thing. But I have to say the produce is above and beyond the BEST I can find. And the people working there know what they are doing and it shows. I love quality service.
Vanessa: The knowledegable, friendly and helpful staff, the challah bread on Fridays, the chorizo in the meat department, the above and beyond amazingness of their specialty cheese cases, the layout of the store, how Bob & Randy have a deep passion for and love their business, the FRESH FRESH FRESH produce, the time and care that goes into the preparing and upkeep of packaged items (deli salads to pizzas) and the cooking classes upstairs…plus one million more things.

Carly: That this location is far away from me. All of the Harmons I have been to are great but this Farmington location is amazing! It is top notch.
Evonne: I have been shopping at Harmons my entire life…I can honestly say I have never had a bad experience.
Lindsey: There are two Super Harmons: one in Farmington and one in Draper. Unfortunately, I live in the middle of both. They are worth the drive though!
Michelle: I wish the stores closer to me had the fun extras like the gelato bar and cooking school with date nights. I was also not a fan of the goat cheese we tried, but that is entirely not their fault.
Stephanie: That my local Harmons isn’t as big and amazing as the Farmington location. But there is the Bangerter Crossing location nearby me that is similar.
Vanessa: That the meat department runs out of chorizo way too often, that sometimes their cut up fruit is soggy. I wish they carried better hoagie, hot dog and hamburger buns and I wait way too long at the deli counter to be helped sometimes.

Carly: Yes, I have already told so many people and I have been to the one near my house frequently to buy some of the amazing fancy cheese and bread they have.
Evonne: I am always preaching about Harmons. When someone gives me the excuse they live too far…I always say it is totally worth the drive.
Lindsey: Yes! I can’t wait to set up a date night with my husband and take a class or two at their culinary school.
Michelle: Yes! I was totally impressed with the freshness of their products and positive mood of their employees. I have been back to a few Salt Lake Valley stores several times since.
Stephanie: The question is when do I NOT refer a friend to Harmons? Seriously… my love for this place is borderline obsessive.
Vanessa: YES! Harmons is the only place I shop and I annoyingly tell everyone so and all the reasons why all the time.

Disclaimer: The Sassies were treated to a tour of the new Harmons Grocery Store in Farmington and a tasting of some of Harmons’ gourmet fare in exchange for a feature on SassyScoops.com.

I had been given the address to our SassyScoops destination, Gourmandise, and as I turned the last corner before arriving, I gasped: I love this place! I had been there twice before but couldn’t remember the name nor the address. After parking and walking in, I could tell the other Sassies were just as excited as I was to be there.

After sitting at our table we were all delighted to find an extensive dinner menu—we had all known of Gourmandise as an authentic European bakery, but didn’t have as much experience with the café aspect. Becky (PR) gave her recommendations and set us up with server Ashley, who was very knowledgeable about the menu, helpful, and attentive.

We browsed through the menu of Panini and deli sandwiches, gourmet salads, and entrees and settled on our choices. Though not all of the entrees looked beautiful, they all made up for it with taste.

Not everyone enjoyed the Beef Bourguignon, but I did. What surprised me most was the Lemon Chicken Quarter; I almost didn’t taste it because it didn’t look extremely appetizing, but after putting the chicken into my mouth, I involuntarily elicited a “Wow!” under my breath. The taste was delectable, the taste of lemon just right. My usual go-to is salmon, but when I saw it in a puff pastry I was suspicious (because puff pastry? On salmon?). Again, I learned my lesson to not judge a plate by its cover: it was, in my opinion, the best-tasting thing on the table.

Of course no trip to Gourmandise would be complete without some time spent at the pastry cases choosing precisely how you’ll end your evening (sweetly, of course). Don’t be intimidated if you don’t know how to pronounce what you’re ordering; it’s okay to just point (and drool, but be discreet).

And, of course, you need to choose a little extra to bring home with you (“for the kids”).

I have to mention, I’m really glad Gourmandise’s site is kept up-to-date with seasonal menu items (the salmon! On Fridays!), and that they’re also on twitter so I can find out what’s going on (Chef teaching how to properly make a tart, patio is open, etc.). I do love a business with a social media presence.

Now that I’ve given you a taste of my own experience, it’s time to throw your hat into the ring to get your own.

What was your first impression?

Camille: As soon as I caught sight of that pastry/dessert case up front, I was hoping the new jeans I was wearing that night had a LOT of stretch in them! I’d need it with as many treats I wanted to sample!
Jen: Gourmandise is a beautiful restaurant. My first impressions was it is a wonderful location, and holy moly—what an amazing dessert case!
Jenny: “Oh my goodness—I LOVE this place! I’ve been here before but couldn’t remember the name of it. I’m so glad we’re here.”
Kim: The smell. So yummy. Loved walking past the huge bakery window on my way to the table. It got me so so excited for my dining experience and the dessert afterwards.
Kristina: I love Gourmandise. I used to go there regularly when I first moved to SLC, about 10 years ago, when it was called “The Bakery,” and they have really updated and modernized it. It looks like a European bakery and you can’t take your eyes off the giant case of sweets that will add about 5 inches to my butt, which you don’t even care about because everything looks so good.
Lindsey: I had no idea they has such a serious selection of pastries! They were both impressive and stunning. The colors in the tarts were exquisite and I have never seen so many kinds of chocolate cake.

What did you like the most?

Camille: I didn’t realize they had a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner! I was really impressed with the flavor combination of the summer salad, their version of the grilled cheese and the salmon dish in the puff pastry—full of flavor, yet not heavy! Plus, the kids’ menu is inexpensive and includes PB&J’s! Very realistic!
Jen: I love the whole atmosphere of the restaurant. There were people in there eating and socializing, as well as people stopping by to pick up a beautiful dessert to take home.
Jenny: The food, But Of Course! I knew their desserts were top notch so I shouldn’t have been surprised to find the entrees were outstanding as well. The salmon was my favorite. Also, Ashley was a fantastic server, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly.
Kim: I loved the salmon. I am not a huge seafood fan, and to be honest it didn’t look all that appetizing, but I didn’t let that stop me. It was divine and the lobster bisque sauce on the side was TDF. I also ADORED the yummy, yummy salad and homemade poppy seed dressing. It was so creamy and delicious, it could have been dessert on its own.
Kristina: I LOVED the Lemon Chicken Quarter. I almost stabbed a Sassy in the eye in order to get more than my fair share and was completely unapologetic. I also loved the grilled cheese. I sort of have a grilled cheese obsession and this did not disappoint. I think my favorite dessert is one of the most simple, which is their chocolate mousse.
Lindsey: The Saumon en Croûte was incredible. When it came out from the kitchen, I didn’t think that I would like it because it wasn’t the “prettiest” dish on the table, but that lobster scream sauce is the stuff. Very good.

What didn’t you like?

Camille: It was confusing to know whether to sit down at a table to be served, or order at the counter then find a seat.
Jen: I can’t think of anything I didn’t like.
Jenny: The awkward parking lot, but being downtown, you do the best with what you’ve got.
Kim: The beef bourguignon. Usually I love it, but this did not do it for me. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t get myself to love it.
Kristina: I wasn’t a huge fan of the Beof Bourguignon. I don’t love things cooked in red wine, and it was a bit bland to me. I’ve also had their chicken salad in the past and was disappointed it had curry in it. I’m a chicken salad traditionalist and so I was disappointed I couldn’t get a traditional chicken salad sandwich.
Lindsey: It was very crowded when we were in there and it took a while for some of our food to get to us. It is also confusing when you walk in—if you want a pastry, you go right up to the counter. If you want a meal, you seat yourself.

Would you refer Gourmandise Bakery & Cafe to a friend?

Camille: Yes…and with so much to offer for food/treats and their late hours of operation, any time would be a great time to visit!
Jen: Yes! I have been talking about it with my family and mom and plan to come back soon.
Jenny: Without question. I’d also suggest they bring me with them.
Kim: Most definitely. I love Gourmandise and have since I was little. I love the plethora of desserts to choose from and every time I go I crave a little something different and this time my new choice of the Decadense did not disappoint.
Kristina: Definitely and absolutely. I recommend it all the time and will stop by and pick up bakery items when I am downtown, on a regular basis. They have delicious specialty cakes, and they are reasonably priced. I think I will ask if they can put a picture of The Hoff on their fruit tart.
Lindsey: I would recommend it for a late night dinner or dessert, but not for a meal with your family. The food is spectacular for a date night or dinner with friends, but not for my toddlers.

The restaurant was also voted “Salt Lake City’s Best Dessert” five years running, boasting the largest selection of made-from-scratch European pastries and desserts in the valley.

What was your first impression?

Camille: The size of the cupcakes are more realistic to a “health-conscious” serving size. I could probably feel less guilt eating these cupcakes.
Emily: I liked the vintage, eclectic style of the main part of the store. Very fun! And Leslie looked pretty cute all vintaged up herself too! It seemed like a fun place to come with girlfriends for a little afternoon treat.
Jenny: “This is an eclectic collection of decor. Where are the cupcakes?” I was surprised that the cupcake aspect of this shop seemed to be just another accessory to a cacophony of ‘vintage’ gear.
Kim: Convenient downtown location…but at the same time it wasn’t too deep into downtown Salt Lake, so there was enough parking on the street, which was nice.
Kristina: I’ve been to Mini’s on numerous occasions, and it’s very eclectic and interesting. I have to admit that some of the vintage items creep me out a bit, because The Osmonds just have that affect on me, but I think it’s a cute place to come and have a cupcake or a bridal/baby shower. You know, if you’re into babies and things.

What did you like the most?

Camille: The PB Fix cupcake, and chocolate ganache frosting on some of the other cupcakes were what I liked the most (and yes, I just ate the frosting!).
Emily: I really liked the PB Fix and Smore Please cupcakes. Those were my favorites! And I truly loved the vintage Coca-Cola machine. I wanted to slip it into my purse and take it home, but alas, my purse was too small.
Jenny: I found some of the pieces on the wall interesting, in particular a framed posted detailing different place-settings and table manners.
Kim: The ganache topping on the chocolate cupcakes. It was so so so yummy. I also enjoyed the fun atmosphere; it was as if you stepped back in time to another era. I also adored eating in…the mismatched pretty plates and pink forks were so fun, as well as the cake plates the cupcakes were served on.
Kristina: I have tried many of their cupcakes in the past, and some of them were dry. But I honestly have to say, all the cupcakes we tasted were delicious. The chocolate ganache was to die for. I think it should be a required part of the food pyramid. I’m not a big fan of citrus, but even the lemon cupcake was awesome. I also don’t love regular chocolate cake, because it’s generally dry, but Mini’s chocolate cake was very rich and chocolatey.

What didn’t you like?

Camille: I wasn’t a fan of the vintage decor and felt it overshadowed the actual product. If I were a new customer, I’d probably feel that the cupcakes were a side show to the collection of the 70′s paraphernalia.
Emily: I remember the Snowball cupcake (coconut) not tasting as flavorful as I would have liked, and for some reason, though the other gals loved the ganache, I wasn’t a fan. But more than that, I didn’t love it when the owner made her case for why she was the only “real” cupcakery (“from-scratch recipes” rather than “doctored cake mixes”) and put down local businesses in the process. It really wasn’t cool.
Jenny: I didn’t like the cupcakes—they didn’t taste like anything better than something I could make myself, and their presentation wasn’t appealing to me (couldn’t decide which to taste first because I wasn’t interested in any of them). I was not impressed with the owner’s bragging about her place in the local cupcake shop scene, and I find speaking ill of competitors to be in poor taste. The effort to create a comfortable atmosphere failed: I found the ‘vintage’ furniture to be dingy and uninviting and many of the decorations tacky.
Kim: It was probably because it was close to closing time, but it seemed like the selection of my favorite flavors to take home to my kids had dwindled and I was stuck picking some random flavors to take home to my family.
Kristina: One of my favorite combinations on the planet, besides Lady Gaga and meat dresses, is chocolate and peanut butter, and I have to say that their chocolate/PB cupcake wasn’t my favorite. I think the PB had a bit too much sugar for my taste. The prices were a bit on the high end, but they do make everything by hand, so I guess that’s why they are priced higher.

Would you refer Mini’s Cupcakes to a friend?

Camille: With so many cupcakeries in the area, I’d refer a friend to one that stood out. Although I didn’t mind the taste of the cupcakes, this one just didn’t stand out to me.
Emily: If someone were in the Salt Lake area and were craving cupcakes, I would. Or perhaps for a special event. But I wouldn’t tell someone to drive from, say, Utah County just to buy one.
Jenny: No.
Kim: Certainly. I would love to take my grandmother and the other ladies in my life for a little treat there to celebrate anything from birthdays to Mother’s Day, or just for no plain reason.
Kristina: Yes. I have brought their cupcakes in to my office on several occasions. Just one of many reasons I am their favorite coworker.
