Da HotDog King

We are so excited about this week’s review, and not just because there’s a really good chance we really liked the tasty fare. What’s super cool is this is the first time the Sassies have reviewed a mobile restaurant of sorts—in other words, a food cart. I know, what the heck took us so long?!?!

I first met Troy, the owner of Da HotDog King, while dining at a very sketchy restaurant with a few Twitter friends. After I heard how much the others raved about Troy’s dogs, I knew we needed to learn more about Da HotDog King and its menu full of gourmet hot dogs. In the process we also learned a lot more about Troy, an amazing guy with some amazing plans for his business and the city. (Hopefully more to come on that later this summer…)

Da HotDog King

Da HotDog King is a full-service street cart that offers a variety of hot dogs and polish sausages.

Troy serves the entire Salt Lake City area but has a few favorite locations, including 400 South and Main Street across from the federal courthouse and then a night or two a week at Club Jam in the Marmalade District. (Yes, there’s actually a Marmalade District in SLC!) Due to the rain, Troy wined and dined us inside Club Jam. Don’t you just love these Chinese-style lanterns inside the club?

Here’s what you’ll find on Da HotDog King’s menu:

  • ISLAND DOG: All-beef hot dog with a homemade coconut mustard, mango/pineapple salsa topping, coconut flakes and celery salt.
  • PICNIC DOG: All-beef hot dog with homemade tangy potato salad, raspberry chipotle barbeque sauce and real bacon bits.
  • KRAUT DOG: All-beef hot dog with homemade sauerkraut, mustard, sport peppers and celery salt.
  • SOUTHWEST DOG: All-beef hotdog with homemade chili, melted cheddar cheese, guacamole, tomatillo salsa and tortilla flakes.
  • THAI DOG: All-beef hot dog with sweet & spicy lemongrass shredded chicken topping, homemade coconut mustard, sweet basil and chives flakes (one of his biggest sellers).
  • UTE DOG: Beef sausage with homemade fry sauce and wrapped in pastrami (the other biggest seller).
  • DESSERT DOG: All-beef hot dog with caramel topping, raspberry chipotle bbq sauce, strawberry creme infused with tequila and celery salt.
  • KILBY DOG: All-beef hot dog wrapped with honey maple bacon, coconut mustard, raspberry chipotle bbq sauce and grilled onions
  • ITALIA DOG: All-beef hot dog with marinara sauce, Parmesan alfredo sauce, real bacon bits and basil/chive sprinkles
  • POLISH SAUSAGE: All-beef polish sausage with mustard, grilled onions, celery salt and sport peppers.

Troy also offers customers a selection of chips and drinks to complete the meal. Plus, Da HotDog King has an extensive catering menu. I believe he even does wings and sometimes burgers!
