I have been hearing about the FREE third Saturday children’s activities for years so I was thrilled the museum invited us to come. I knew I would love them and I did—I will be back every month! The art projects are fun for adults, teenagers and older kids as well as the little ones. They do a really great job selecting an activity that works for everyone. When it comes to the museum’s art activities you can tell they put a lot of time into the organization, set up and volunteer training so everything goes really smoothly. Check out the fun we had and the upcoming activities:
FREE Third Saturday for Families:
December 19th Jigsaw Puzzles
Make your own jigsaw puzzle. We will stroll throughout the UMFA’s Native
American galleries and “Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American
Indian Art” exhibition to find examples of intricate patterns,
interesting shapes, and decorative lines to help design one-of-a-kind
puzzles.
January 16th Papyrus Painting
The UMFA has recently re-installed the Egyptian and African galleries with
old favorites and new additions including a sarcophagus! On this Third
Saturday we will use fine brushes and paint to decorate papyrus- a
paper made from a tall plant that grows along the Nile.
Febuary 20th Paper Lanterns
Celebrate Chinese New Year at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on this Third Saturday
and Artful Afternoon. We will search throughout the fabulous Asian
galleries for inspiration to decorate our paper lanterns and create
animal hats.
March 20th Oil Pastel Drawings
Celebrate the mural works of Pablo O’Higgens and experiment with drawing big- big
paper, bold color and big ideas. Come prepared to contribute to a group
mural that will be displayed in the UMFA classroom.

They also have fun “Virtual Exhibitions” that are a perfect way to entertain the family when we are all stuck inside during the winter.
Be sure to visit the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. Thanks to our trip I learned it really is quite family friendly!
