I’m a ginormous fan of fitness and exercise (probably because I’m a ginormous fan of eating lots of good food—and by “good” I mean “greasy and delicious”). I got into sprint triathlons last summer and have quickly become addicted to yoga and Pilates thanks to our local rec center.

One thing I don’t love, even after one marathon and two half marathons, is running. I’ve never enjoyed it, probably because I’ve trained badly in the past and am not very good at it. That’s why I’m super excited to tell you about a new retreat for runners of all levels, even mediocre runners who would rather swim a mile than run a mile (that would be me).

The Run Like a Girl retreat will take place at the Zermatt Resort in Midway from August 11-13 (the main part of the event is Friday and Saturday). Here’s a bit about the event:

This year, our women’s-only running retreat will be hosted by the Zermatt Resort in Midway, Utah. Nestled in the mountains, it provides a sweet escape from the bustle of everyday life with ideal routes for runners. Participants will learn to train smarter at the feet of local running elite. You’ll walk (or run) away with a personal regimen designed to help you take your fitness to the next level. Then you can put your learning to the test by running the race on Saturday! Whether you have just started running, or you have been running for years, this event is for ALL skill levels!

You can choose to attend the full weekend or just participate in the run Saturday morning. So. Much. Fun! Here’s a sample schedule:

I will admit, pole fitness classes have a certain stigma attached to them, but after trying out a beginner pole fitness class at PEARL by Adult Dance and Fitness in Midvale, I say throw all stigmas out the window. (And you could easily do just that with the upper body strength those classes require!)

Of course some of the apparel might lead you to believe there’s quite a bit of sexy involved, but I’m okay with that—I think a little (tasteful) sexy makes for a big boost in self-confidence!

I’m a huge fan of a good, sweat-inducing workout and PEARL’s class did not disappoint. How can you not break a sweat when you try a new spin over and over again and still can’t get it right? (I apologize if the thumbnail image on the video is the original, totally unattractive one. I did change it but it takes a while for YouTube to update. Just hurry and click “play”!)

I have a very serious lack of coordination, believe you me.

Aly was a super fabulous instructor and extremely patient. I loved the guided stretching at the beginning and end and the one-on-one instruction whenever we needed it (and I needed it A LOT).

When asked why women were interested in pole fitness classes, Aly told us there were two main reasons: one, they wanted to shake up their fitness routine, get in better shape and/or lose weight; and two, it was a fabulous confidence booster. After one hour with Aly, I could see how both of those would be true. I was SO sore the next day, bruises and all (of course, I wore them with pride) and teaching your body to move in a different way was rather liberating. (Not a lot of sexy in spin class…)

Yeah, I won’t be quitting my day job any time soon. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the pole fitness workout, even better was watching some of the gals working out on the aerial silks. I would have loved to have seen this gal in action!

I’ve always wanted to strengthen my core and improve my flexibility, and while our local rec center’s yoga and pilates classes are helping, I’d kinda like to throw in a few of these aerial fitness classes, bruises and all. By the end of class, I did discover I can pull off a “bow and arrow” headstand, so I’m not totally inept! (I’m sure it looks a lot more fluid when Aly does it, but it was my first, you know.)

PEARL also does private parties—birthday parties, bachelorette parties, bridal showers and girls’ nights out. I think an aerial silks party (a la Cirque du Soleil) would be so much fun for a girls’ night out! Bring in your own food and drink and take to the sky on those aerial silks!

What was your first impression?

Camille: Honestly, I was a little apprehensive to be a part of this review, thinking I’d be taking part in a pole dancing performance. But I was impressed in realizing that it was just another fitness/aerobic class, only with a pole, instead of weights, to strengthen the body!
Emily: I had no idea what to expect, and the studio is tucked away in a commercial strip mall in Midvale, but it was cool to walk in and see these super fit women doing moves I’ve seen in Cirque du Soleil!
Jenny: My first impression of participating was that I was skeptical to even do so. But I wanted to learn, and I’m up for a different kind of workout, so I committed to go. The store-front items for sale didn’t make me think the entire concept wasn’t about being excessively sexual, but once we began the workout, I didn’t feel like I was bound to go outside my comfort zone if I didn’t want to: this was going to be a great workout.

What did you like the most?

Camille: Aly (the instructor) was very patient with all of us and worked one-on-one to make sure we were getting it right. What I also liked was I really WAS getting a work out and using muscles I never thought I had…but still proved they needed to be developed!
Emily: How hard the workout was–oh my gosh! I was so sore (and bruised) the next few days. But I love a really good workout. I also loved how fabulous Aly was and her telling us how much pole fitness classes help improve self-confidence, flexibility and strength. I love that! I also found it fabulous that women of all body types enjoy the classes at PEARL.
Jenny: What an outstanding workout! Truly, I was sore in all the right places the next day (with one teeny bruise and one significant bruise), and found myself wanting to go back and do more. The instructor was very encouraging and helpful in leading a very thorough stretch and warmup, as well as getting the tricky moves down. Small class size helped with instruction, too, I think. I also liked that there were women of all shapes and sizes in attendance at Pearl that evening.

Camille: The bruising on my shins and inner thighs for the next couple of days! But that’s to be expected, apparently.
Emily: It was pretty dang warm upstairs where the pole fitness class was held—a little cool air would have been lovely! Oh, and the location is in a not-so-nifty part of Midvale, but there is a Holiday Oil on the corner—the perfect place for a #PDR (proper drink run)!
Jenny: My right hand ended up swollen from my own ‘death grip’ on the pole. I also wish we would have had more class time.

Emily: Totally! I’ve already shown off my bruises told a few friends about how awesome the class was. I’d love to take a class together with some girlfriends! (Any takers?)
Jenny: Yes, but discreetly so. Like it or not, there is a stigma about spinning on a pole, so in order to recommend it, I would have to be in sincere conversation with someone who would be open to the idea, not just assume that people who do this are freaks (they’re absolutely NOT).

Somehow it ended up the only Camille and I were able to actually try out the whole indoor bouldering thing at The Front Climbing Club in Salt Lake City. Michelle had some excuse about being eight months pregnant. Steph was all like “I’m deathly afraid of heights,” and Veronica faked some sort of broken bone thing. Whatever. Camille and I took one (or is it two?) for the team, donned some stylin’ workout clothes and slipped our feet into recently (I hope) Lysoled shoes.

Chalked up and ready to go, we took on the bunny slope of The Front’s indoor bouldering wall: the yellow circle. And the yellow circle is where we stayed the entire time. Heck, we didn’t even make it up some of those deceptive little round stickers! But it wasn’t for lack of trying:

Seth, our tour guide and impromptu trainer, tried to explain to us the basics of climbing:

• It’s all in how you use your legs, not your arms. (Try telling that to Camille’s and my painfully sore forearms. They were sore for DAYS.)
• It’s all about your body’s quadrants and balancing those quadrants and utilizing opposing quadrants. (What the…?!?!)
• It takes a very, very long time to learn the fine art of bouldering. (I believe it. So does Camille.)
• When all else fails it’s a good thing those mats are super soft. (Trust me.)

Of course Camille and I never did this:

Perhaps with a few more trips to The Front (this time to the Ogden location to check out the fabulous new digs)…

…we too will be climbing nearly upside down with only chalk dust separating us from the wall and sudden death. (Okay, not sudden death but it makes for a better story.)

With winter around the corner, you should definitely plan a family trip to either of The Front’s locations. An hour or two on the yellow circles followed by an hour or two on blue (or black) diamonds sounds like the perfect cold-weather day to me (though your body may not thank you).

Camille: With all the strength training opportunities that are included with the climbing club, this is some serious rock climbing!
Emily: “Where the heck is the front door to this place? Oh, there it is!” After that initial impression I was amazed at all the services they offered outside the indoor rock climbing and bouldering part.
Stephanie: Where are the ropes? There were people just climbing rock walls like Spiderman.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): The gym has a very relaxed atmosphere.
Veronica (Ogden location): The building is absolutely beautiful! Oh, and also “Holy TALL walls!”

Camille: That Seth, the instructor knew his stuff and was so patient with a couple of newbies who felt very comfortable with only the color yellow.
Emily: The laid-back atmosphere and the willingness of complete strangers to help you scale a particularly difficult yellow-dot route. (Yellow dots are like the green circles of ski runs.) And of course Seth was very, very patient with Camille and me.
Stephanie: That you can bring your dog there and they have an outdoor doggy paradise.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): Our tour guide/instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Veronica (Ogden location): The staff is friendly and they are all experienced climbers, so they are very helpful and willing to teach and answer questions. They were also great with the kids. They even offer after-school programs, climbing clubs and summer climbing camps.

Camille: The location! Unless you’re traveling from the north side of the road, you’ll miss it completely.
Emily: The location was a bit tricky to find as was the front door…or was that just me? (Don’t answer that.) I also felt like it was a bit stuffy inside and the equipment looked like it needed a good cleaning.
Stephanie: The climbing. I am afraid of heights. And it was in serious need of air conditioning.
Veronica (Salt Lake location): I was sad that due to an injured arm, I couldn’t try climbing.
Veronica (Ogden location): I can’t think of anything!

Camille: Absolutely! And I’d even go back with that friend just to continue building the callouses on my fingers.

Veronica (Ogden location): Absolutely! Ogden is SO lucky to have The Front right downtown. The revitalized downtown area is big on “outdoor” adventure activities. Now they have indoor surfing, skydiving and rock climbing/bouldering all within a few blocks of each other. Where else can you get that?

As we know, Utah is known for the variety of recreational sports, due in part to the change in seasons and the gorgeous mountains that surround our valleys.  But did you know how popular the sport of rock climbing was among the Utahns?  And how many different types of rock climbing are available?

The people at The Front Climbing Club do, as well as the thousands of people that participate in their indoor climbing facilities.

Both offer workout facilities, weight rooms, locker rooms and showers, cardio machines, yoga classes, Pilates reformers, and a club house with ping pong tables and free internet for “chilling.”  The main attraction, however, is the 10,000 square feet of climbing wall with various levels of difficulty.

Here’s what Seth, our very friendly, informative and patient instructor told us about The Front:

Seth gave us a tour of the facility, fitted us for climbing shoes, then took us into the climbing room for a brief instructional.  After pointing out the safety features, simple techniques required, and the levels of difficulty identified by colored stickers, Seth felt Emily and I were ready to tackle the wall.

I don’t think there’s much more we can say to convince you Invert Sports is the go-to shop for local water sports rentals. From the time we arrived and saw the boat docked, stocked and ready to go, to the final “accidental” flip of the inner tube, we were smitten.

Tyler, an employee of Invert Sports and a well-trained driver, accompanied us during our time with the boat.  He was so patient when it came toteaching us how to wake surf, our phobias of the insects and the craziness that just comes with giddy girls spending a day out in the sun.  He was so fun whipping us around on the tubes, and even cooperated in secretly executing the perfect wipe-out—for video purposes of course—unbeknownst to Vanessa and Kitty, the riders on the tube, who were expecting a calm ride back to the dock. (Again, we’re sorry for the bruises and inability to walk the next day!)

Camille: The boat, toys and driver were all there, loaded, docked and ready for us to jump on at the time scheduled. The boat was clean, well-maintained and the driver knew his stuff—and was fun!
Emily: “Is there really a lake at the end of this extremely long country road?” But seriously, I loved that everything was ready and waiting for us, including Tyler (aka our cute driver).
Jill: The equipment all looked brand new and the guy helping us was friendly, but not creepy friendly.
Kitty: Adventure time!
Vanessa: Wow! They have really, really nice equipment. We had a boat while growing up and we love to hang out on friends’ boats and rent boats a lot. THIS water equipment was the nicest I have been on…and it runs really well too.

What did you like the most?

Camille: Tyler’s patience in teaching how to wake surf. For as many times as he had to slow the boat and bring it around to pick up the floating “surfer,” he still maintained a smile!
Emily: Definitely the waverunners. I LOVE heading out on one of these and jumping whatever wakes I can find. Unfortunately I had to settle for the boat’s wakes as there were no moving houseboats on Utah Lake for some reason… Oh, and did I already mention our driver was cute? I did? Well, how about the fact that he was super nice and super helpful too?
Jill: The part I was most impressed with was how well Tyler got along with us. I loved how willing he was to teach us how to wake surf, even though I ended up being terrible.
Kitty: I loved that my cheeks (both of them!) threatened to be sore from so much laughing and having fun.
Vanessa: I really liked having a chartered boat, which means someone does the pick-up, delivery, drives it, helps teach water sports and sets up and takes down the different toys. The boat we were on can hold up to 16 people! When you divide the cost among that many people, it’s awesome. I think more companies should do this for work parties, and my family needs to do it for our next reunion.

Camille: That we hadn’t arranged to keep the boat longer!
Emily: That I was eaten ALIVE by mosquitoes in the first 30 minutes of boating, but that can’t be helped. I’m super sweet and irresistible to blood-sucking insects. Other than that, hitting a wall of water while on the waverunner wasn’t super awesome, or the nasty, purple/blue/blood-red bruise the size of Texas on my right butt cheek from a nasty wipeout (also on said waverunner). Oh, and I didn’t love wake surfing but anything that requires balancing like that is beyond my limited coordination.
Jill: Nothing. I like boating, but I don’t like all the docking and whatnot that comes along with it, so it was really nice to just have someone else do all that!
Kitty: I didn’t like having to wait for Camille to finish showing off on the wake board.
Vanessa: HA! The huge welts I had on one side of my body from flipping out, falling down, smashing mid-air into Kitty. But seriously, if you aren’t doing that, you aren’t having a good time. But honestly, Invert Sports was perfect—I am a huge fan now!

Camille: Absolutely! For those who don’t have the luxury of owning a boat themselves, Invert Sports is definitely the way to to enjoy some time out on the water.
Emily: Totally! I’m already thinking we need to somehow organize a family SassyScoops getaway to Lake Powell and invite Invert Sports along. They seem to know how to do water sports right…
Jill: Most definitely. Hopefully said friend would invite me along too.

Vanessa: YES, triple yes! Let me tell you why: the side of the family that rents water craft gets the cheapest they can find—and it’s NOT fun. The customer service, quality of the water craft and the fun we have suffers because they cut just a little bit on cost. Invert Sports is by far the best rental company I have ever worked with and I will only use them from now on.

The Sassies spent a day last week reviewing Invert Sports, which means we spent the whole day wave running, tubing, boating and wave surfing.

This summer will be Invert Sports’ 8th year in business. Invert Sports was created for people who love boating by people who love boating.  They understand  everyone doesn’t always have the means or the time to deal with boat ownership. Invert Sports has different options to fit YOUR needs:

• Boat Rentals: They were the first company in Utah, Arizona and Nevada that started renting high-end ski boats for Tournament wakeboard/water ski boat rentals. Ski boat rental prices range from $395 to $895 depending on the boat model and duration of rental days. Most of their rentals are newer models, giving the best water sports experience available. Rentals include: MasterCraft boats, Centurion ski boats, tow vehicle, Hyperlite wakeboards, wake skate, wake surf, kneeboard, HO skis, air chair and tubes.

  The boat we used for the review accommodates up to 16 people comfortably. Think about that price divided by all the couples you could invite for a weekend away, a family reunion or an affordable staycation his year! Watercraft delivery and pickup are available at most lakes in the Utah and Arizona area.

• Boat charters, Tours and Water Sport Lessons: I did not know this sort of thing was even an option out here in Utah. When we reviewed Invert Sports, this is the option they had ready for us and it was fantastic. The boat was waiting for us in the water, stocked with all the toys and a driver. He patiently stopped and started the boat every single time (and I mean EVERY SINGLE TIME) one of us fell off, cleaned up the boat, operated, docked/undocked and helped us with wave runners, wake boarding, wake surfing and tubing. I personally think this would be a great option for a low-key vacation, day out with extended family and even a business event.

  Water Sport lessons, charters and tours range from $695 to $1,395 depending on the lake and hours scheduled. Check out all the different places you can use this option: Lake Powell, Utah Lake, Jordanelle Reservoir, Deer Creek Reservoir, PineView Reservoir, Bear Lake, Lake Havasu, Lake Pleasant, Lake Roosevelt, Lake Tahoe, Lake Mohave, Lake Shasta, Lake Mead, Sand Hollow Reservoir, Lake Berryessa, Lake New Melones, Trinity Lake, Lake Mcclure, Lake Don Pedro, Quail Creek Reservoir, Strawberry Reservoir and Willard Bay.

  

• Jet ski, Wave runner, PWC and Sea Doo Rentals: We also reviewed their wave runners, which we had a blast with! They offer the nicest and most current model jet ski and wave runner rentals from Yamaha, including the 2009 VX Deluxe three-seater sit-down wave runners with reverse! They also have single and double trailers available if need be.

• Some Other Points to Keep in Mind: Watercraft delivery and pickup are available at most lakes and you can schedule vacation packages to major houseboating lakes in the western states. Invert Sports is a total water sport outfitter!
