Located in a beautiful old house on Main Street in Lehi, Flowers on Main blew us away with their passion and creativity.

You are greeted with the fragrant smell of flowers bought from South America and local sellers and a warm feeling when you walk in the doors. The shop is decorated according to the seasons and you can’t help but be inspired. Then you start learning about how Flowers on Main is more than just a quaint little flower shop–they were even on an episode of Sister Wives doing the flowers for a wedding. They didn’t know it was a “Sister Wives wedding” and at their flower consultation Holly, one of the owners, even asked, “Are you guys sisters or friends or something?” The sister wives giggled. The clip was also shown on Oprah.

Then you hear how the owners James and Kris (husband and wife) with cousin Holly, always had a passion for flowers and opened the shop together after 40 combined years in the floral business. Shortly after opening the shop, Kris lost her vision to some cancer related issues and now jokes about being the “delivery driver.” Her sunny personality seems the perfect fit for a flower shop owner, even if she can’t see the flowers any more. She had us in stitches all evening.

You are further impressed when you learn about the Flower of the Month Club where a simple specific flower arrangement is delivered every month with a little education on that flower. What a fabulous birthday or Christmas present! September’s flower was the deep purple aster above.

Thanks to our fabulous friend Rachael over at TodaysMama.com and the good people at Kraft Lunchables, the Sassies were able to take their families on a family field trip to Boondocks Fun Center in Draper. Unfortunately, life happens (often) and by the time the scheduled date rolled around, only Kim, Lindsey, Kristina and I were able to do the field tripping. But we still had a blast and so did our kids from age 2 to 14.

What was your first impression?

THE SCOOP

Emily: I actually had my first impression a couple years ago when Nathan and I went to Boondocks for a date. We had so much fun racing each other on the go karts and trying out out par each other in mini golf. This time I did learn it can be a little tricky with groups if you don’t call ahead and fill out the appropriate paperwork so things are ready when you arrive, but Boondocks did their best to accommodate us and were fabulous even with my lack of planning.
Kim: Bright lights, music, beeps, the kind of place one could get lost in a world of fun.
Kristina: The environment is really fun and energetic. There are many different activities, a place to eat, and it was all rather easy to navigate.
Lindsey: Honestly, my first impression was how very loud it was. Then I looked around at all these families laughing and carrying on and I knew why. My family fit right it.

What did you like the most?

Emily: The group-rate packages. They were seriously a great deal, and most require only a minimum of 10 people. Our family is more than half that number! Our faves were also the amount of fun activities outside the arcade: laser tag, mini golf, go karts, a slick track, bumper boats, and this cool mini theater that made it feel like you were riding a real roller coaster!
Kim: LOVED the 4D theater. I liked that they had a few different lines and each line was a different coaster experience. My kids wanted to keep going and going on it, and I obliged. However, I think in my old age I am getting motion sick. We also loved winning tickets; I thought it was especially nice when one of the workers stopped to give us tips and tricks on how to win MORE. My kids loved picking out a little prize at the end, and we even had enough for the baby to get a prize too. Dad and I? We got stuck with the 1 ticket erasers. :) Also, the pizza was pretty darn delicious, something that surprised me.
Kristina: I really loved all the different available activities. There was laser tag, miniature golf, batting cages, bumper boats, arcade games, etc. And the pricing was very reasonable. The food was also excellent. I was rather surprised by the quality of the food.
Lindsey: I love that they have the classic Mrs. PacMan arcade game. I love a throw back game. But for the whole family, I am going to have to say laser tag. My husband and I took our toddlers in to play and had a blast with them. Turns out using a 3-year-old as a human shield to block your front censor really boosts your score! My boys had a blast in what they thought was a real-life Star Wars extravaganza.

What didn’t you like?

THE SCOOP

Emily: The super long wait for the go karts and even longer wait for the slick track. But then again, once you’re in the car you like how long the ride goes! Oh, and the ever painful cashing in of tickets for treasures. Why does that always take my kids so long? I did think the mini golf at night was way too dark. It was really hard to see the balls and the course. They definitely need a lot more light.
Kim: Hmmm, I can’t really think of anything I didn’t like. I might have wished I left the baby with a sitter so that I could have had more fun with my older kids. She is 2, and while she enjoyed some of the things, many were just too old for her.
Kristina: My husband and I played a game of miniature golf, where, of course, I dominated and kicked his butt. However, about 5-6 holes were unlit and all the lights were out. Some were so dark; we literally could not see the ball on the course. This also prevented me from cheating.
Lindsey: The food was better than I thought it would be, but it still wasn’t really great. I also had a hard time breathing (it was stifling!) in the room where you prep for laser tag. (That presentation of the rules, etc. is kind of long for antsy kiddos.)

Would you refer Boondocks Fun Center to a friend?

Emily: Definitely! I think it would be a great place for a birthday party, family night or group date night!
Kim: I certainly would. We have been to similar places in California, so it was refreshing to have such a fun place close to home where we could literally spend hours and have unlimited amounts of fun.
Kristina: Definitely. We come here often and have brought family members with young children. There is something for every age to do.
Lindsey: Yes! We had a great time even though we had littler kids than most. Aside from Mrs. PacMan and laser tag, the mini golf course is fantastic (a fire-breathing dragon at the end!), the go karts are always a highlight and their indoor playground is the best I have seen. In fact, my kids wanted to spend most of their time on the playground pretending to be Indiana Jones.

By the raise of hands how many of you have been to Disneyland?  I’m guessing that a lot of you have your hands up in the air waving frantically.  Now, I want those of you who haven’t been there but really, really, REALLY want to go to raise your hands.  So by now all of you have your hands up in the air, right?

Disneyland has long been a favorite vacation destination for families in Utah.  And who can blame them?  It is a short 1.5 hour flight or if you are the road tripping type, just 10.5 hours away.  In March my family and I were lucky enough to make that road trip and visit the “Happiest Place on Earth”.  And I am here to tell you it really is the happiest place on earth, even in the rain.  Thankfully we are like the Boy Scouts of Disneyland, always prepared.  A few Mickey-adorned ponchos later and nothing was going to bring us down.

Thankfully before the rain began we did get to take one of our favorite photos.  Yes, boys like Sleeping Beauty’s Castle too.  Who doesn’t?  It is the gateway to Fantasyland and a perfect place for your Disneyland journey to begin.

The best part of the rain?  No lines for the turkey legs, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, or It’s a Small World.

The second day of our adventure at the Disneyland Resort provided us with more blue skies and far more photo opportunities…because going to Disneyland is all about making memories with your family.  The easiest way to remember them?  Tons of pictures.  And we spent the entire day making new memories while exploring Disney’s California Adventure Park.

Now I am sure you are all ready to book your tickets right now and start your own Disneyland memories.  And I haven’t even shared the most amazing part of our adventure.  World of Color, the new light and water show at Paradise Bay.  It was our first time seeing the show and all I can say is WOW!  It is the most elaborate water show I have ever seen.  That mixed in with fire, color, scenes from your favorite Disney films, and the music.  It’s all about the music.  I don’t think there was one person who wasn’t singing along to each and every song.   I think I would drive back to Anaheim  just for an evening to watch World of Color.  Because it is that extraordinary.

Now what are you waiting for?  Let the memories begin.  I know I plan on going back to make even more.

Disneyland provided my family with passes to the parks.  All amazing memories are my own.

When the Sassies invited my handsome husband (my words, not theirs) and me to go see Salt Lake Acting Company’s The Persian Quarter on Valentine’s weekend, we said yes without hesitation.  (Well, there was a little hesitation while we made sure we had a babysitter.)

We love plays and don’t get out enough to see all the many plays that are going on in Salt Lake City.  And we’ve never seen a play at the Salt Lake Acting Company so we were excited to go test it out!

First of all, I loved the little theater at 168 West 500 North.  It looked like it used to be a church building or something similar.  Whatever it used to be, I just loved the charm.  Modern is always nice, but old, quaint and extra touches of character in a building always feels more intimate.  One more bonus:  the seating had ample leg room, something the giant in me always appreciates.  I didn’t even have to stand to let people walk by!

And then the play (The Persian Quarter): WOW!  We really loved it.  We had no idea what it was going to be about ahead of time, so we read through the synopsis of it in the Playbill (is that even the right word?) and got a good understanding of the Iranian culture and the 1980 American hostage situation the play portrayed.

I was a little worried I would be bored because while reading through the Playbill (again, am I using that word right?), I noticed there were only four actors in the whole play.  Hey, I’m a 21st century girl!  I need entertainment in order to stay focused!  But the actors were amazing and so professional.  The play had no action and very little in the way of props—it was mostly dialogue, but the dialogue was captivating, interesting and so very well delivered.

We will definitely keep The Salt Lake Acting Company on our list the next time we find the time and money to go see a play!

What was your first impression?

Rebecca: I loved that the neighborhood was up near the capitol and that the building was old and unique. The entryway was a bit cramped, but the theater was roomy. When the play started, I was excited because there was a good buzz in the air.
Camille: I was a little surprised to see a small, quaint brick building on a quiet street. Probably because I was expecting a large concert hall of some sort!
Jenny: Where’s the theater? Oh, there it is. In that…house? Church? Cool!
Stephanie: The lobby area seemed a little small and crowded so I was pleasantly surprised to see how big and open the theater area was.
Vanessa: I love the building that they hold their plays in, the charm of it, how clean they keep it, the welcoming staff and the seating itself, set up very nicely!

What did you like the most?

Rebecca: I really loved the actors and thought they were perfect for their parts.
Camille: Although I was surprised at first, I really did like the feeling of a small theater. The actors weren’t too far from where you’re sitting in the audience so you feel a little more “connected” to the play.
Jenny: The setup of the stage and seats. While not a theater-in-the-round, it seemed like most seats in the house were great seats. Very intimate stage-audience atmosphere.
Stephanie: The seating. The seats were large with lots of leg room. It didn’t feel like you were sitting on top of your neighbor.
Vanessa: I love their children’s plays like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Go, Do, Go! Maybe that shows off just how simple my mind is. I enjoy them as much as my kids and the acting, stage, scripts are really top notch.

Rebecca: The actors smoked on stage! The cigarettes were herbal, but still. It smelled bad.
Camille: I had a hard time really getting into the performance. I think it was the play itself, not necessarily the actors. But I’m willing to give it another whirl.
Jenny: The actual play wasn’t my style. I’d like to see another show at this venue, though.
Stephanie: The play we saw. It had a feminist and slightly political undertone which isn’t my cup of tea.
Vanessa: Their adult plays do not appeal to me and it really could be my simple mind! But the posters, ads, write ups, etc. on the different adult plays do not make me want to see them terribly too much.

Rebecca: Yes. I’d definitely tell people to go check out a play.
Camille: Probably to a friend that would appreciate the arts.

Stephanie: Yes. But I would have them research the play they are seeing. I have had several friends who have been there and love it.
Vanessa: Yes for children’s plays and to a certain type of friend, yes to the adult plays because I have been very impressed with the theatre, acting, staff, etc.

The Salt Lake Acting Company has been around for 40 years! SLAC strives to “produce seasons of thoughtful, provocative, regional and world premieres; nurture, support and develop a community of professional artists; produce and support emerging playwrights; and make a significant contribution to the community and to the American theatre field by commissioning, developing and producing new plays.”

Their lineup for the 2010-2011 year is: Boom, Angels in America, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, The Persian Quarter, Circle Mirror Transformation and Saturday’s Voyeur 2011. My first experience with Salt Lake Acting Company was when I took my daughters and niece to see If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and I was very impressed with the actors, staff, play and the actual theatre itself. This time we were invited to see an adult play with friends, which was a completely different experience that you will have to wait to hear about!

They invited the Sassies to see The Persian Quarter which “unfolds on the final day of the Iranian hostage crisis in 1980 Tehran with Anne, an American hostage and Shirin, an Iranian revolutionary student who is one of her captors.Thirty years later in New York City, their daughters, Emily and Azadeh, meet accidentally in an empty classroom at Columbia University during the visit of Iranian President Ahmadinejad.”

When most of us think of Thanksgiving we try to remember all the things we are thankful for.  When I think of Thanksgiving, of course I think of those things too, but I also remember how grateful I am to have an amazing place like Thanksgiving Point right in my backyard.

I think everyone knows Thanksgiving Point for their golf course, dinosaurs and gardens.  But recently when the Sassies visited Thanksgiving Point we were treated to a the wonderland that is the Emporium.  You already read about how the Sassies enjoyed our evening of exploring the shop but did you know about all the FUN we had?

There was quite a bit of monkey business to be had.  Well, sock monkey business.

But it wasn’t all fun and games.  The Sassies also oohed and ahhed over most everything in the Emporium.  But hey, even that is a bunch of fun.

And thankfully there are plenty of soft places to fall in case you feel faint when you find the item of your dreams.

Grab a couple girlfriends, maybe a neighbor or two, or even your favorite mother…
