Another cupcake shop?

Yes!

That is what I thought when One Sweet Slice opened up by my house and I proceeded to tell to my husband that I was getting a bit sick of cupcakes. The shop opened up nearby on 10600 South and Redwood Road in South Jordan.

But then on a day that I needed sugar I went into the shop and was beyond impressed with the customer service, sweet owner, taste of the cupcakes and selection. My husband (who usually thinks cupcakes are dry, lack flavor and are a bit of a bore) found the cupcakes to be moist, flavorful, inventive and the perfect treat.

My favorite has always been the Raspberry Chocolate.

So I quickly changed my mind and was grateful and a little nervous to have this cupcake shop close to my house. I mean, I bet that shop has added to holiday weight quite a bit. Oh, but it is oh so worth it.

Then I had them do my daughter’s personalized sculpted cake and once again was just blown away with the attention to detail, technique, taste and the magic of the cake.

I knew I had to get the Sassies in there to check it out and to review on our site.

Let me tell you a bit about the store and the sweet owner:

The owner, Janell, started doing wedding cakes when she found she had some extra time and an itch to do something creative after her first child. Her business grew and grew and she has made beautiful wedding cakes for numerous people. Three more children later, Janell decided she needed a storefront! But she needed to add something for walk-in customers just wanting a sweet treat.

CUPCAKES!

Janell thought that she would just simply put her perfected and delicious cake batter in the cupcake tins and it would be just as perfect. But she quickly learned that it was a totally different arena with cupcakes. She took six weeks to perfect all her NEW cupcake recipes. *And let me tell you, boy, does it show!*

Her store has been open for not even a year yet and so far it has been successful and enjoyable. They have new flavors they are trying out all the time as specials. And if the special does well enough, they put it into the regular rotations. They also do frozen drinks, hot chocolate, cake pops, brownies, smaller circle cakes for get-togethers and custom cakes for weddings, parties and birthdays.

The shop itself is adorable, a fun place to sit and eat a sweet treat. They also hold birthday parties in the back for younger children and also older children teaching them to do cupcakes or cakes for a party. I am excited that soon they are going to hold cake decorating classes (the owner used to teach Wilton classes back in the day) to offer to their grownup customers.

I have learned that people’s preference in cupcakes are a lot like finding “The Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie” because it is a bit impossible. Everyone likes certain things in cupcakes just like they prefer cookies that are totally different than everyone else!

So what did the Sassies think of One Sweet Slice? Were they impressed as I have been? Or do the tastes of the cupcakes not mirror their personal likes and dislikes? We shall see! Stay tuned for the official review on Wednesday!

Live Reindeer and Christmas Trees: From Nov. 25 to Dec. 23, two of Santa’s reindeer, Comet and Cupid, will be at Thanksgiving Point’s Water Tower Plaza Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 10 p.m. Children can feed and pet the reindeer while the family chooses a freshly cut evergreen to bring home. My girl’s eyes just light up when they see these reindeer and I love that it is FREE!!
Photos with Santa: Christmas photos with Santa Claus are a must have every single year. Santa will be at Thanksgiving Point on Dec. 6, 13 and 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Water Tower Plaza.
Ice Sculpting Demonstration: See the fascinating art of ice sculpture on Monday nights in December. Each evening will feature an artist transforming a 300-pound block of ice into a holiday-themed design or character. Come watch this amazing piece evolve on Dec. 5, 12 and 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Water Tower Plaza. This event is free to the public.

The Sassies took a brief hiatus over the summer to spend time with our families and enjoy the long days the sun provided us. I would like to say that we all came back relaxed and refreshed, but those long days of summer were tiring and we needed a little pampering. That is why I was so excited we got to visit REMEDEZ in Orem, Utah on our first review night back.

REMEDEZ is a full service salon and spa that carries Aveda products exclusively, which I know may pose a problem for those who are loyal to other salon products. Station 22 Cafe

The gals of SassyScoops have reviewed almost 100 places and I have meet more business owners than I can remember. Buying local, biodegradable, organic, eco-friendly—all catchphrases they spout off but I don’t buy that all of them really believe in (and when it comes down to it) actually do what they say. Those terms have become good for marketing because they are what customers like to hear. But I believe I have become pretty good at calling the owners’ bluffs and know when it isn’t true.

I can tell it’s different and can tell people are being honest when I can hear and feel and see their PASSION. It is in the way they cook, in the way they talk, in the experiences they share with us and in that spark in their eye.

The owners of Station 22 in Provo DO buy local, DO understand and have a love for their local community, DO care about their customers, DO care about the environment and DO mean what they say.

Man, you guys; it was just refreshing to see. I can’t even tell you.

Let me give you some specific examples:

After watching the documentary TAPPED and learning about other countries’ struggles with water, the owner, Richard Gregory, decided water would always be FREE at their restaurant. They offer water (flavored with lemons, herbs, cucumbers, etc.) to their customers free of charge, which does end up hurting their bottom line, but they do it because it’s important to them. It also helps them educate their customers.
They allow local farmers to bring in their produce in trade for food at their restaurant. They are supporting many local farmers or families with gardens by allowing them to do this.
After moving to Utah to help is mom with real estate she owned in Provo, Richard noticed downtown Provo was having a hard time trying to generate a sense of community with a good atmosphere and an engaging environment. So they decided to create what they wanted and to help start a movement by opening up Station 22 on Center Street, live music and all.
The way Richard talks about how essential downtowns are to America and to our communities is just beautiful. Let me quote him for you:

The downtown is an asset that belongs to everyone and if you don’t take care of it, these businesses, these buildings will not stay here forever. … It is vitally important that people spend their money downtown, that they understand what their dollar does. … That what little more they pay here for independent business, they are investing in a system that allows everyone to participate in owning their own business. Living your own dreams. I feel very strongly about this. Provo isn’t my downtown but it is an American town and it has a lot of value and these buildings are amazing.

QUESTION

What was your first impression?

THE SCOOP

Camille: The size of the cupcakes are more realistic to a “health-conscious” serving size. I could probably feel less guilt eating these cupcakes.
Emily: I liked the vintage, eclectic style of the main part of the store. Very fun! And Leslie looked pretty cute all vintaged up herself too! It seemed like a fun place to come with girlfriends for a little afternoon treat.
Jenny: “This is an eclectic collection of decor. Where are the cupcakes?” I was surprised that the cupcake aspect of this shop seemed to be just another accessory to a cacophony of ‘vintage’ gear.
Kim: Convenient downtown location…but at the same time it wasn’t too deep into downtown Salt Lake, so there was enough parking on the street, which was nice.
Kristina: I’ve been to Mini’s on numerous occasions, and it’s very eclectic and interesting. I have to admit that some of the vintage items creep me out a bit, because The Osmonds just have that affect on me, but I think it’s a cute place to come and have a cupcake or a bridal/baby shower. You know, if you’re into babies and things.

QUESTION

What did you like the most?

Camille: The PB Fix cupcake, and chocolate ganache frosting on some of the other cupcakes were what I liked the most (and yes, I just ate the frosting!).
Emily: I really liked the PB Fix and Smore Please cupcakes. Those were my favorites! And I truly loved the vintage Coca-Cola machine. I wanted to slip it into my purse and take it home, but alas, my purse was too small.
Jenny: I found some of the pieces on the wall interesting, in particular a framed posted detailing different place-settings and table manners.
Kim: The ganache topping on the chocolate cupcakes. It was so so so yummy. I also enjoyed the fun atmosphere; it was as if you stepped back in time to another era. I also adored eating in…the mismatched pretty plates and pink forks were so fun, as well as the cake plates the cupcakes were served on.
Kristina: I have tried many of their cupcakes in the past, and some of them were dry. But I honestly have to say, all the cupcakes we tasted were delicious. The chocolate ganache was to die for. I think it should be a required part of the food pyramid. I’m not a big fan of citrus, but even the lemon cupcake was awesome. I also don’t love regular chocolate cake, because it’s generally dry, but Mini’s chocolate cake was very rich and chocolatey.

What didn’t you like?

THE SCOOP

Camille: I wasn’t a fan of the vintage decor and felt it overshadowed the actual product. If I were a new customer, I’d probably feel that the cupcakes were a side show to the collection of the 70′s paraphernalia.
Emily: I remember the Snowball cupcake (coconut) not tasting as flavorful as I would have liked, and for some reason, though the other gals loved the ganache, I wasn’t a fan. But more than that, I didn’t love it when the owner made her case for why she was the only “real” cupcakery (“from-scratch recipes” rather than “doctored cake mixes”) and put down local businesses in the process. It really wasn’t cool.
Jenny: I didn’t like the cupcakes—they didn’t taste like anything better than something I could make myself, and their presentation wasn’t appealing to me (couldn’t decide which to taste first because I wasn’t interested in any of them). I was not impressed with the owner’s bragging about her place in the local cupcake shop scene, and I find speaking ill of competitors to be in poor taste. The effort to create a comfortable atmosphere failed: I found the ‘vintage’ furniture to be dingy and uninviting and many of the decorations tacky.
Kim: It was probably because it was close to closing time, but it seemed like the selection of my favorite flavors to take home to my kids had dwindled and I was stuck picking some random flavors to take home to my family.
Kristina: One of my favorite combinations on the planet, besides Lady Gaga and meat dresses, is chocolate and peanut butter, and I have to say that their chocolate/PB cupcake wasn’t my favorite. I think the PB had a bit too much sugar for my taste. The prices were a bit on the high end, but they do make everything by hand, so I guess that’s why they are priced higher.

Would you refer Mini’s Cupcakes to a friend?

THE SCOOP

Camille: With so many cupcakeries in the area, I’d refer a friend to one that stood out. Although I didn’t mind the taste of the cupcakes, this one just didn’t stand out to me.
Emily: If someone were in the Salt Lake area and were craving cupcakes, I would. Or perhaps for a special event. But I wouldn’t tell someone to drive from, say, Utah County just to buy one.
Jenny: No.
Kim: Certainly. I would love to take my grandmother and the other ladies in my life for a little treat there to celebrate anything from birthdays to Mother’s Day, or just for no plain reason.
Kristina: Yes. I have brought their cupcakes in to my office on several occasions. Just one of many reasons I am their favorite coworker.

What was your first impression?

THE SCOOP

Camille: I had bad experiences in the past with street carts, so I was skeptical at first but Troy was so personable, and passionate about his products! Plus the combination of toppings was intriguing so I was anxious to start tasting!
Emily: My first impression was chatting with Troy during a Sketch Dining get-together. I knew immediately we needed to feature him (and his cart) on our site. My second first impression was the menu—I couldn’t believe the varieties of hot dogs he offered. Some sounded kind of out there but I was willing to give them a try. (Anything for SassyScoops.com!)
Kim: Lots of interesting choices to choose from. For a hot dog cart, that is something new. Troy was super nice and easy to talk to and excited about what he does.
Kristina: I am a big fan of carts and a big fan of hot dogs. Who doesn’t love a good, juicy dog every now and again? Even though I look like a petite, gentle flower, I can chow down on street food with the best of them, and his descriptions were making my mouth water.

What did you like the most?

Camille: Definitely the Thai dog with spicy lemongrass chicken and coconut mustard! (And the Ute was a close second!)
Emily: I’m with Camille. The Thai dog and Ute dog were both delicious, but the Island dog may have been my favorite. SO good! Wait! I forgot about his “dessert” hot dog that had caramel topping, raspberry chipotle bbq sauce, strawberry creme infused with tequila and celery salt. Interesting and delicious!
Kim: Anything with bacon. I was SO happy to see that Troy had a hot dog with bacon on it, and a delicious hot dog with bacon to boot.
Kristina: I really loved the Kilby Court dog. It was tangy and sweet at the same time. I also love a good old classic, and I loved the Chicago Dog. I’ve eaten a lot of Chicago wieners in my day, and this was top notch.

What didn’t you like?

THE SCOOP

Camille: Although an interesting concept, I wasn’t a fan of the dessert dog. I’d prefer my chocolate and caramel sauce on some ice cream. Sorry, Troy!
Emily: Only that he doesn’t have a cart in Sandy. I’m thinking he needs to park outside Rio Tinto Stadium, especially during the Journey concert in July.
Kim: That I have to get my four-year-old to buy me my plain hot dog with mustard, as Troy believes if you are going to have a hot dog, you have to go all the way or no way…sometimes though, I crave that plain old dog with mustard. However, I am still lucky my kids are young enough to order it for me.
Kristina: Honestly, I was afraid to try the dessert dog. I am normally adventurous, but it scared the crap out of me. I actually didn’t try it. I would also recommend a Unicorn Dog that would be filled with sprinkles and magical rainbow goodness.

Would you refer Da HotDog King to a friend?

Camille: Absolutely! In fact, that same day I called my grandpa who is a hot dog connoisseur! He’ll be making a trip to SLC soon!
Emily: I’ve already told plenty of people about him and how great his gourmet hot dogs are. And quite a few friends are already fans!
Kim: CERTAINLY! I am tempted so many nights to find a sitter so I can go and grab a hot dog for myself and bask in its deliciousness.
Kristina: Absolutely. Troy is going to have his cart at our Girls’ Night Out and I am thrilled. The next time I am downtown, I will make a trip for a delicious dog.

What was your first impression?

THE SCOOP

Emily: “What a fab location! I love the area of 9th and 9th.” And then: “Holy cow! Look at that chandelier7mdash;how crazy-amazing is that?!?!” And a few seconds later: “Oh my gosh, those waffles smell delicious!”
Jen: I loved the outside with the handmade sign that the owners made. I also loved the feeling Dolcetti exuded of a local gathering place.
Kim: What a very fun and upbeat, happening place. Loved the modern atmosphere and the smell of the yummy waffles.
Lindsey: My eyes were drawn to the awesome and quirky chandelier when we walked in. The menu was also framed in such a beautiful frame that I actually considered ripping it from the rafters and taking it home with me. I was shocked too that the menu was so diverse! Gelato? Paninis? Waffles? Yes, please!
Stephanie: I absolutely loved the funky eclectic decor. Especially the chandelier/light fixture… so cool. It seemed very fitting for a hip urban area.

What did you like the most?

Emily: The salted caramel and the coconut macaroon gelatos. And the Belgian waffle with fresh berries. Oh, and the super cool, super funky sort of “I Spy” table in the corner.
Jen: I loved all the unusual flavors of gelato, like the Sea Salt Caramel. Very different and delicious. I also loved that they have other unusual items on the menu like the homemade waffles and the little table they had in the corner with a shadow box top. The owners add something new every week and you have to see if you notice what it is!
Kim: The Belgian waffles were my very favorite part. Perfectly crusted on the outside and yummy crepe-like soft on the inside. I wish I had one now.
Lindsey: I liked the unique flavor combinations the most. The salted caramel gelato really blew my mind. I feel like you could even describe the gelato flavors as smart! Also, the waffles were divine. They were the perfect blend of soft on the inside and crunch on the outside.
Stephanie: The sea salt and caramel gelato. It was confusing and thrilling all at once. Is it sweet or is it salty? Oddly delicious. Not to mention the Belgium waffle. Holy yum.

Emily: Hmmm…the only thing I could think of is not having more drink options, but that’s stretching to find something!
Jen: It was quite busy when we were there. I thought they could have used one more person working behind the counter. But overall I was very pleased.
Kim: The parking situation. I had to park pretty far away to find a spot to park and then had to walk. Other than that, the location itself is great and fun.
Lindsey: I didn’t like that there were so many Ute fans. And the parking was kind of wonky, but most places downtown are like that.
Stephanie: The seating. There was a big open seating area with a couple couches. But other than that there wasn’t a huge amount of seating. Plus, parking is a little difficult to find in the area.

Emily: Definitely, especially if that friend is going to take me with her!
Jen: I have referred it to some friends and even have been back for a second helping!
Kim: I already have! I have gone back to share in the waffle bliss with some of my friends. The gelato flavors are unique and delicious; I encourage anyone to go there and try every flavor!
Lindsey: Yes!
Stephanie: Yes. The prices are fabulous, the gelato is scrumptious, and the environment is fun. Plus maybe if I refer the friend they will bring me home a scoop.
